Satisfactory Academic Progress

According to federal regulations, financial aid students are required to make academic progress to retain eligibility for Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work Study, Florida Student Assistance Grant, Academic Competitiveness Grant, Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loans, and Federal Plus Loans.

The academic progress includes the following standards:
  • 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • 67% completion rate of classes.
  • Completion of the degree in a reasonable time frame (not more than 90 credits for an Associates degree and not more than 180 credits for a Bachelors degree).

Students who fail both GPA and completion rate are denied financial aid and may not petition.
Students must successfully complete at least 12 credits. These classes will have to be paid out of pocket, and you must achieve a grade of “C” or better for each class, no withdrawals allowed.

If, after completion of the 12 credit hours, the grade point average and the GPA are above the standards, you will be awarded financial aid.

If not, you may petition only if you have a valid, legitimate circumstances that prevented you from making academic progress. The circumstances must have occurred during the time you failed academic progress and your petition must be submitted with supporting documentation.

Valid circumstances include but are not limited to:
  • Extreme illness or injury of student.
  • Family crisis.
  • Death of immediate relative.
You have 21 days from date of denial to submit your petition and all related documents to the Student Financial Services Office. Your paperwork will not be accepted after this deadline has passed.

Students who fail one of the academic standards (grade point average OR completion rate):

You may petition for financial aid reinstatement only if you have valid, legitimate circumstances that prevented you from making academic progress. The circumstances must have occurred during the time you failed to make academic progress or completion rate. Your petition must be submitted with supporting documentation.

Valid circumstances include but are not limited to:
  • Extreme illness or injury of student.
  • Family crisis.
  • Death of immediate relative.
If you do not have legitimate, mitigating circumstances and supporting documentation, your petition will not be accepted and you will have to attempt to regain eligibility by way of completing enough credits to raise your GPA to a 2.0 or bring your completion percentage up to 67%, whichever applies.

Students who have attempted more than 150% of their credit hours, will be able to petition for reinstatement only in the following two circumstances:
  • You have already earned a degree and are seeking a second degree (not a third or fourth degree).
  • You had taken required ESL courses.
  • You will have 21 days from date of denial to submit your petition and all related documentation to the Student Financial Services Office. Your paperwork will not be accepted after this deadline has passed. If neither of these circumstances applies to you, you will not be allowed to petition and must cover any further enrollment at Broward College out of pocket.
Students who fail two or more of the academic standards:
  • Grade Point Average (GPA).
  • Completion rate.
  • More than 150% of your program of study.
You will not be allowed to petition and must cover any further enrollment at Broward College on your own.
Students who are nearing the 150% mark in their studies (attempted at least 125% of your program of study) will only be allowed to petition for reinstatement for the following reasons:
  • You have already earned a degree and are now attempting a second (not a third or fourth etc) degree.
  • You have previously taken required ESL courses.
  • You have 21 days from date of denial to submit your petition and all related documents to the Student Financial Services Office. Your paperwork will not be accepted after this deadline has passed.
If neither of these circumstances applies to you, you will not be allowed to petition and must cover any further enrollment at Broward College out of pocket. Petitions received within the 21 days of the denial will be reviewed by an Academic Appeals Committee and their decision will be made within 5 business days. The decision of the committee is final. You will receive the committee’s decision in your Broward College e-mail.
