Veterans Application Steps

Students who have served in the U.S. armed forces may be eligible to receive veterans' educational benefits to assist with educational expenses. These benefits may also extend to spouse and child dependents of disabled veterans. All the information you need to access services and benefits is available on this web site. The Veterans Affairs Office at Broward College is designed to act as a liaison between the students and the Veterans Administration. Broward College staff is ready to serve our veterans and guide them through the system for a successful educational experience.

If you need additional assistance, please visit the GI Bill Web site or call toll free 1-888-GIBILL1
(1-888-442-4551) to speak with a Veteran’s Benefits Counselor.

  1. Apply for Broward College admissions:

    • Pay the admissions application fee.
    • Submit all official transcripts from your high school/GED equivalency and from all colleges/universities you have attended to the admissions office. The VA will not accept certification from Broward College if transcripts are not evaluated and documented after the second semester.
  1.  Apply online through the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP) (for new students only). This will activate your benefits with the Veterans Administration. Print and submit the electronic application with signature to the Broward College VA Office located within the Financial Aid Office at each campus. Forms will appear once you have logged in. Click here for VONAPP additional information.

VA Form 22-1990

VA Form 22-1995
Request for Change of Program or Place of Training or over a year.

VA Form 22-5490
Application for first time Survivors' and Dependents' using educational assistance.

VA Form 22-5495
Request of Program or Place of Training for Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance.

Once you have applied to VA, you will receive a letter stating the type of benefits, the number of months of eligibility, and your benefit expiration date.

  1. Register for classes.
  1. Once you have registered and paid for classes, you need to submit a Broward College Veterans Certification Form (VCERT) for each term of enrollment. This is the main form you need to establish your benefits and eligibility at Broward College. Once this information has been received, the VA Coordinator will submit your enrollment certification to the Department of Veteran Affairs. It can take anywhere from 60-90 days for VA to process your information and for you to receive your first check.
  1. Veterans are entitled to one fee advance per academic year. If you need a fee advance to help pay your tuition, please visit any campus Student Financial Services office to request one. This is to help pay your tuition while your benefits are being processed. The fee advance is due 60 days after the first day of the term no matter what session you are enrolled in for the term. Fee advances do not include funds for books. The fee advance must be paid by the due date, even if you become ineligible to receive benefits.
  1. For Post 9/11GIBILL (Chapter 33), you must also submit a copy of the certificate of eligibility. Which you will receive once VA has processed your application.

  2. Submit a copy of your DD-214 form to Broward College (strongly recommended).

  3. Verify your Enrollment (For individuals under Chapter 30, 33, 1606, and 1607 only). Prior to receiving your check, you must verify your enrollment at the end of each month. You can verify your enrollment by calling the Interactive Voice Response (IVP) system at 1-877-823-2378 or visiting the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (W.A.V.E) website.

The fastest way to file for Veteran’s benefits is to apply online through the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP). The VONAPP Web site is the official US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Web site that enables veterans to apply for benefits using the internet. Veterans are entitled to receive benefits under one (or more) of the chapters listed under VA Benefits. Chapters cannot be used concurrently.

If you use VONAPP, please print out your electronic application and submit to Broward College with your signature.
