All veteran students and eligible dependents of veterans at Broward College who wish to receive veteran’s educational benefits must meet the admission requirements and complete a Broward College Veterans Certification Request Form (VCERT) as well as any required Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) forms. If you are a Chapter 33 student, you will also be required to bring in your Certificate of Eligibility. If you are unsure of what forms you need to fill out please refer to “What Forms do I need?”
Once you have registered for classes and submitted the VCERT the Veterans Coordinator will report your enrollment to the VA Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia. You will receive an e-mail from the VA stating your enrollment for the term. It may take from 6 to 10 weeks before payment authorization is made.
Prior to receiving your check, you must verify your enrollment at the end of the month. You should wait until the end of the first month of school to verify your enrollment for the first time. You can verify your enrollment by calling the Interactive Voice Response (IVP) system at 1-877-823-2378 or visiting the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (W.A.V.E) website.
Students are certified based on enrolled sessions. The following students will be certified on the first day of class: less than ½ time, certificate students and new Chapter 35, 1606, and 1607 students (students who have more than an eight week break from class).
The WAVE system will display payment information AFTER the VA processes your claim for educational benefits. Further, you will be able to see the dates of the enrollment period and the monthly rate payable during the enrollment periods. Remember that you are not paid for the term you are paid by month. Payment information only reflects the current month's enrollment not the entire term.
Students seeking certificate degree programs have an additional attendance requirement of filing a Veterans Attendance form (VATTEN) at Broward College which must be submitted on a monthly basis. Failure to do so will result in termination of benefits. Further, if 9 hours of scheduled classes are missed, benefits will also be terminated. This attendance is in addition to any attendance verification the VA requires of the student.
All transcripts and any prior training should be submitted to the admissions office as soon as possible. The VA will not accept certification from Broward College if transcripts are not evaluated and documented after the second semester.
If a veteran or a dependent of a veteran changes degrees, does not attend school for over one year or changes schools, he/she must file a new form called Change of Place or Training form (VA Form 22-1995 for the veteran and VA Form 22-5495 for dependents of a veteran.) The forms are electronic and accessed through the GI Bill web site in VONAPP.
All students must submit a new VCERT for any enrollment changes especially Chapter 33 students since it may result in a VA overpayment of tuition and fees. If you change your schedule once your certification is sent to the VA, you will have to submit another Broward College Veterans Certification Request Form (VCERT). Changes cannot be reported without the new form.
Fee advances are deferments issued to veterans according to Florida Statutes. Veterans are entitled to one fee advance per academic year and an additional fee advances each time there is a delay in the receipt of benefits. The fee advance is due 60 days after the first day of the term no matter what session you are enrolled in for the term. This is to help pay your tuition while your benefits are being processed. Fee advances do not include funds for books. The fee advance must be paid by the due date, even if you become ineligible to receive benefits. If you need a fee advance to help pay your tuition, please visit any campus Student Financial Services office.
Veterans are encouraged to file for financial aid to help meet other educational costs including books and supplies. View Eligibility for Financial Aid.
The VA must be notified in order to make any address changes. Students must also show their ID at the campus Registration Office to change their addresses.
Remember: Veteran Affairs will ONLY pay for courses that are within the degree program.
Withdrawal of classes: If the student withdraws, audits or stops attending a class, benefits may be terminated and the student may owe some funds back to VA.
