Program Benefits
Chapter 30
Montgomery GI Bill
Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
  • Pays up to 36 months of educational benefits.
  • Accelerated payment available for some high-cost, high-technology programs.
  • Can be used for college/vocational school training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, correspondence courses, tests for licenses or certifications, and flight training.
Chapter 31
Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Pays up to 48 months of educational benefits.
  • Covers tuition, fees, books, supplies, and subsistence allowance.
  • Can be used for any program deemed suitable by the Vocational Rehabilitation and Counseling Division.
Chapter 32
Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
  • Pays up to 36 months of educational benefits.
  • Must have contributed to VEAP account during service.
  • Government matches contributions.
  • Can be used for college/vocational/technical school training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, correspondence courses, flight training, and cooperative training.
Chapter 33
The Post 9/11 GI Bill:
  • Veterans who were regular active duty must serve a minimum of 90 days honorable active duty after 9/10/2001.
  • Reservists must serve a minimum of 90 days aggregate active duty after 9/10/2001.
  • Full benefits are paid to those who served at least 36 months after 9/10/01. Those who serve less time will receive a proportional benefit.
  • VA will pay tuition and fees directly to the school. Subsistence and book allowances are paid directly to the veteran up to $1000 per year.

Chapter 35
Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
  • A veteran who died or is permanently and totally disabled as the result of a service-connected disability. The disability must arise out of active service in the Armed Forces.
  • A veteran who died from any cause while such service-connected disability was in existence.
  • A service member missing in action or captured in line of duty by a hostile force.
  • A service member forcibly detained or interned in line of duty by a foreign government or power.
  • A service member who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient treatment for a service connected permanent and total disability and is likely to be discharged for that disability.

This change is effective December 23, 2006.

Chapter 1606
Montgomery GI Bill
Selected Reserves (MGIB-SR)
  • Pays up to 36 months of educational benefits.
  • Can be used for college/vocational school training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, correspondence courses, tests for licenses or certifications, and flight training.
  • Available to members to the Selected Reserves (Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, Army National Guard and Air National Guard).
Chapter 1607
Reserve Educational
Assistance Program (REAP)
  • Pays up to 36 months of educational benefits.
  • Available to a member of a reserve component who serves on active duty on or a after Sept. 11, 2001, under Title 10, U.S.C., for at least 90 consecutive days under a contingency operation.
  • Can be used for graduate and undergraduate degrees, vocational/technical training, on-the-job training, apprenticeship programs, correspondence training and flight training.
Licensing and Certification
  • Pays for reimbursement for taking an approved licensing or certification test.
  • Must receive reimbursement of up to $2000 per test.
  • Available to those eligible to receive training Chapter 30, 31, 32, 35, 1606, and 1607.
VA Educational
Work Study
  • Pays while receiving training under Chapter 30, 31, 32, 35, and 1606.
  • Must be enrolled full or three-quarter time.
  • Pay rate is the greater of state or federal minimum wage.

  • Amounts vary for most programs based on type of training, training time and/or enrollment status.
  • Some recipients may be entitled to receive up to 48 months of benefits if eligible under more than one VA education program.
