Two BCC students, Paola Mariselli and Kendall Ramsijewan, have been named recipients of Guistwhite Scholarships, awarded by Phi Theta Kappa, the scholastic honorary organization for community colleges. The scholarships are awarded based on the recipients’ scholastic achievement, campus involvement and community activities. Twenty recipients are named annually. Each receives a $5,000 scholarship, certificate and medallion.
Ramsijewan is a resident of Miramar, and a member of the Alpha Delta Rho chapter of PTK on the Judson A. Samuels South Campus. Mariselliof Fort Lauderdale, is a sophomore and is a member of the Omega Phi chapter of PTK on North Campus.
She also was named one of 30 recipients nationally of a Leader of Promise scholarship, awarded by Phi Theta Kappa in 2007. In addition, she was awarded a scholarship from the National Academy Foundation Alumni Business Scholarship Program in 2007.
The Guistwhite Scholars program is named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite, and his wife Margaret. Dr. Guistwhite retired as director of inter-institutional relations at Florida Atlantic University in 1982, where he established the first transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members.
BCC honor students have done well in the Guistwhite program. Among recent recipients were Ailyn Bordeaux, who was named a recipient in 2005; Sally-Anne McDonnell in 2006 and Baron Stephens in 2007.
