The Relay for Life is a nationwide event of the American Cancer Society that brings communities together to participate in the fight against cancer. The event provides an opportunity for individuals to come together to celebrate those who have survived cancer, to remember friends, relatives and loved ones we have lost to it, and to fight back against a disease that touches too many lives.
The event’s format dictates that at least one member of each team entered is always on the path for the duration of the event. Participants may walk or run.
This is BCC’s first year participating in the Relay for Life and will hold its event on Friday, April 11 on the lakeside path on the northeastern edge of the Judson A. Samuels South Campus, 7200 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines. The event will start at 10 a.m. and continue through 10 p.m.
The lakeside path has recently undergone reconditioning and is in tip-top shape for an event such as the Relay for Life, says Interim Provost Teresa Justice.
“Now it’s really a lovely venue for an event such as this one,” she said.
One particularly dramatic part of every Relay for Life is the Ceremony of Hope, in which luminaria – also known as farolitas – are placed along the event’s pathway. Luminaria are flat-bottomed paper bags weighed down with sand and illuminated by a small candle placed in the sand. Light provided by the luminaria symbolizes the hope and perseverance of those continuing the fight against cancer and remain lit throughout the evening.
The College & Universities Relay for Life at Broward Community College welcomes members of the BCC community, plus those of other schools, colleges and universities in the area. The fundraising goal for the College & Universities Relay for Life is $30,000.
