Broward Community College Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Angelia Millender has been elected to serve as a member of the board of directors of the Urban League of Broward County for a one-year term, followed in 2009 by a two-year term and then a three-year term, for a total service of six years.
“I want to see the Urban League work more towards empowering communities,” Millender said. “That would be my focus. If we want to empower and change communities we have to support adult literacy in these communities, because that’s where the achievement gap begins. It certainly doesn’t begin at age eight. We have to educate the parents and these parents need an advocate. We have a wonderful opportunity here to make a difference.”
