Broward College kicks off year's athletic program with September 22 celebration

The most exciting year of interscholastic sports in Broward College history debuts September 22 with the Seahawks volleyball team’s first home match of the season, against the Brevard Community College Titans.

The match is set for 7 p.m. at the George E. Mayer Gymnasium on the college’s A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie. Students, staff, alumni and friends of the college, as well as members of the public, are invited to attend.

“This marks the start of a new era in athletics at Broward College,” said Neil Cohen, associate vice president for student affairs. “Broward has long been recognized as one of the better community college athletic programs in the country, and this year, we’re planning on telling our story and showing off our teams in an unprecedented way.”

The September 22 activities start at 6 p.m. and includes 99 JAMZ-WEDR radio personality Gary D. Wright, promotional giveaways by Student Life and Della Ventura’s Pizza. The Broward College Alumni Association will host a reception for alumni.

The freshman-dominated Seahawks are 5-1 after opening their season with two victories in a tri-match in Leesburg against Lake-Sumter Community College and Polk State College, and by winning three of four matches against conference opponents in a tournament at Palm Beach Community College. Broward and Brevard are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Florida Community College Activities Association’s Southern Division.

Seahawks teams will have two other team debut dates during the fall sports season. On November 4, the women’s basketball team opens its home season with an exhibition match against Palm Beach Atlantic University. The Sailfish are an NCAA Division II program that also is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

On November 12, the men’s basketball team will play an exhibition match against the IMG Basketball Academy, of Bradenton, a world-class training academy for college and professional players.

The three debut dates will all feature special activities and celebrations to introduce the team to the community. All are free, and the public is invited to attend.
