Recently members of the North Campus Student Government Association planted an indigenous Live Oak tree in honor of President Armstrong in the hardwood hammock on the east side of campus. Members of DECA and the Student Ambassadors were also present. This hammock was begun four years ago when the college partnered with the Kids Ecology Corps on a grant from the Florida Division of Forestry to plant 200 tropical hardwood hammock trees. Funding for additional planting was provided by the Broward College Foundation. Plants native to this South Florida ecosystem were planted by college student volunteers working with fifth-graders from Deerfield Park and Coconut Creek Elementary schools. The hammock provides a habitat for native wildlife, reduces air pollution, prevents soil erosion and helps recharge the aquifer while providing beauty and shade on the campus. The tree is an enduring testament to our commitment to a sustainable future.
