As the World Series approaches, Broward College begins a competition that the athletic department hopes will become an annual event – the Broward Baseball Fall Classic. The inaugural series will take place on November 3, 5 and 6 at 6 p.m. at the baseball complex on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie. The Broward Baseball Fall Classic will be an intra-squad competition in which the coaching staff will split the fall roster into blue and gray teams to vie for the title in a best-of-three series.
Selected to serve as honorary head coaches for the Broward Baseball Fall Classic are Sean Guerin, chair of the Broward College District Board of Trustees and Paul Tanner, a member of the Broward College District Board of Trustees and its immediate past chair.
The teams will play seven-inning games using standard American League rules, which include the use of a designated hitter. Lineups will be submitted to umpires at the start of each game and standard substitution rules will apply. Pitches will not be permitted to throw more than 60 pitches per outing, and pitchers may not throw on consecutive days.
The college coaching staff will meet with the honorary head coaches before the tournament to discuss positions, line-ups and other personnel matters.
At the end of the series, each of the honorary head coaches will select a most valuable player from his team for exceptional effort and performance.
The series should provide a solid glimpse at the Seahawks team that opens its spring season on February 1 against the State College of Florida Manatee-Sarasota Manatees. Last year’s Seahawks earned state and national rankings and finished with a 32-14 record.
There is no charge to attend and free parking is available adjacent to the baseball complex.
