The 2009 Florida Community College Press Association annual convention was held October 21-24 at the Ocala Hilton Garden Inn. Broward College, and Broward College’s student publications – The Observer and P’an Ku – won an outstanding number of awards.
The Observer, Broward’s student newspaper, was named the recipient of the third place award for general excellence in division B – for publications at community colleges enrolling 6,000 or more students. The Observer staff also picked up a second place award for Editorials.
Individually, Igor Mello won four awards – first place for Sports Story; a pair of second-place awards, for Sports Photo and Picture Story, and a third-place award for Sports Column. Because of his many awards, Mello also won another – an Inner Circle Award, for students who win awards in three or more categories.
Broward’s other multi-award winner is Eleazar Soriano, who took a second-place award for Editorial Cartoon and third place for Comic Strip.
Other awards were won by Cody McGowan (second place, Arts Review), Bruno Niccoli (third place, News Photo) and Brendan Connolly (third place, General Column).
“I’m so proud of all my students,” said Jennifer Shapiro, coordinator of student publications. “They truly work very hard and publish the best newspaper possible, and the multitude of awards they won clearly reflects that. It’s nice to be recognized and rewarded for doing a great job and also for doing what they enjoy.”
In the magazine competition, P’an Ku writers, photographers and graphic artists took home six awards.
In the individual photography competition, Jennifer Wollaber took first place. In the group photography category, P’an Ku staffers took first and second places. Vanessa Chamorro, Ashley Lamberson and Lauren Laufer won the blue ribbon, and Laufer, Lea Povin and Roberto Soto earned red ribbons.
