Broward women's hoopsters set for season opener

Broward College’s women’s basketball team officially opens its 2009-2010 home season against Palm Beach Atlantic University. Tipoff time is Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m.

Seahawks fans are urged to come early to take part in a 6 p.m. tailgate party on the lawn in front of the George E. Mayer Gymnasium on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. Broward College athletes and coaches will don aprons and grab spatulas, tongs and serving spoons to serve the college community.

The evening’s other activities include an alumni reception, also starting at 6 p.m., and promotional giveaways. WEDR 99 JAMZ announcer Gary D. Wright – a Broward College graduate – will be on hand to call the action. Admission and all game-day activities are free.

The Seahawks will be looking to start a new winning tradition built around three sophomores -- Annette Payne, from Kingston, Jamaica, Brittany Cameron, a South Plantation High graduate and Sarah Pasetsky, a graduate of Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton. The three sophomores should provide a solid nucleus for the team. Pasetsky was a first-team all-Southern Conference player in 2009 and Cameron was named to the all-Southern Conference’s second team.

The Seahawks’ opponents from West Palm Beach should provide a stiff early test. After a one-victory season in 2007-2008, the Sailfish posted a 13-18 record in 2008-2009 regular season and went all the way to the National Christian College Athletic Association’s championship game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University, where they lost 50-48.
