President of the Student Government Association on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus Izunwa Nnakenyi thanked the dignitaries at the dedication of the parking garage. On behalf of the entire student body, she thanked them for the savings from all of the $10 parking tickets that students would no longer get, and for not having to be late to class after searching for a spot. The new facility, for joint use by Broward College and Florida Atlantic University students, was dedicated with a festive event on Oct. 29. It has space for 1,000 cars.
Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. told the students, “This is your facility. You paid for it. I’ve driven around, but I’ve never pulled into a parking spot.” He added that he was, “proud of the look of the entrance to the college” now that the big arch, an added feature of the facility, lends a handsome architectural presence to the campus.
“This is indeed a day to celebrate,” said Florida Atlantic University Vice President and Associate Provost for Regional Campuses Joyanne Stephens. “This is another symbol of the partnership of Broward College and Florida Atlantic University. We share an important value, and that is the importance of our students.”
Balfour Beatty Construction, builders of the facility, sponsored the reception at the dedication, which was attended by more than 100 students. The company’s Senior Vice President Clinton Glass was there to participate in the program and to help cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The architect, Mario Cartaya, of Cartaya and Associates Architects P.A. was also on-hand for the event. “I’m very proud to be part of this,” he said. “I’m not only an architect; I’m a Broward College alumnus. I love this college. I love what it represents. It stands for the commitment of a community to educate its citizens.”
