Broward College’s men’s basketball team, ranked ninth in the Florida Community College Activities Association’s pre-season poll, opened its season with a 76-34 victory on November 1 in an exhibition game against the Palm Beach Wolverines. Despite playing without four injured players, the Seahawks led the entire game. The game “gave our players an opportunity to play against a team comprised of former college players,” said Seahawks Coach Bob Starkman. “We were able to execute our offense and our transition game. We still need a lot of work, but a win is a good start.”
Leading Broward in scoring was 2009 Miramar High graduate Thomas Hawkins, who hit 27 points and added 15 rebounds.
Also in double digits was James Muir, another 2009 Miramar High graduate, who scored 18 points. Sophomores Devyn Erwin and Kervin Bristol also played well in limited action. Erwin, a JUCO pre-season all-America honorable mention, scored 12 points and added 10 boards. Bristol dominated in the key, pulling down 15 rebounds and blocking five shots.
Broward’s next action is November 6-7 in Palm Beach Community College’s Battle of the Beach tournament in Lake Worth.
The Seahawks will face a pair of out-of-state teams in the four-team competition. On Friday at 6 p.m., the Seahawks will take on the Mustangs of Monroe College, of Bronx, N.Y. On Saturday, they face the Falcons of Lackawanna College (Scranton, Penna.) at 3p.m.
On November 12, the Seahawks return home for their official home season kickoff game against IMG Sports Academies, of Bradenton. Game time is 7 p.m. and is preceded by a 6 p.m. tailgate party and cookout on the lawn in front of the Mayer Gymnasium. The event is free for Broward College students, staff and alumni.
