Supplemental Instruction
To assist students in high risk courses, Supplemental Instruction (SI) has been incorporated in specified sections of MAT 0024 (Elementary Algebra), MAT 1033 (Intermediate Algebra) and MAC 1105 (College Algebra) courses. Supplemental Instruction study sessions are informal seminars, offered after class, in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools and predict test items. In addition, students learn how to integrate course content and reasoning skills. Supplemental Instruction sessions are facilitated by students who have previously successfully taken high risk courses and sit through the course again. Supplemental Instruction leaders act as a model student for the discipline. Studies show that 80% of students who participate in Supplemental Instruction pass the course (with a grade of "A", "B", or "C") versus only 20% of non-Supplemental Instruction participants. For future terms, the North Campus plans to offer Supplemental Instruction in English and Science courses.
