Student Affairs

Holistic Advising

  • Holistic Advising is advising from a perspective of addressing personal, social, financial emotional, developmental, cultural and ethnic issues that may affect the academic performance and retention of students.

  • Holistic advising focuses on the whole student rather than individual experience. It is identifying what causing difficulty for a student and recommending the appropriate intervention (Earl1987). It Involves:

    • Encouraging students to seek help when needed before it’s too late

    • Proactive interactions with students

    • Active concerns for students’ academic preparation

    • Willingness to assist students in exploring services/programs to improve skills

    • Empower students with skills that will lead to independence

    • Create awareness of student support services
