Tigertail Lake Recreational Center is now offering American Red Cross certified Lifeguard, first aid, and CPR courses! If you've ever dreamed of being a lifeguard and being ready to save lives then join us as we teach all the critical life-saving skills - both on land and in the water - that you'll need to be an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard. Our experienced staff have several hundred years of combined experience in the industry, and will guide you through such skills as:

  • Water safety
  • Head, neck, and back injuries
  • First Aid
  • Water rescues
  • Choking victims
  • CPR and AED use
  • and much, much more!

Tigertail Lake Recreational Center at Broward College now offers several learning options to fit your busy schedule:

Instructor-Led Basic Lifeguarding

Our full Basic Lifeguarding classes are the complete classroom experience - perfect for learning all the nuances and information and giving you full access to our experienced Lifeguard Instructors.

These courses are full-length, approximately 32 hours, and Tigertail Lake Recreational Center Lifeguard Instructors regularly schedule a variety of classes to accommodate different schedules. All learning takes place in a classroom environment and the skills are practiced at our waterfront facility with certified American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructors.

Once you've completed the full 32 hour course you will be officially certified by the American Red Cross, one of the best-known names in the industry, and ready to save lives! The American Red Cross is the de facto standard in Lifeguard training, and a certification from the American Red Cross means you've had the very best training available.

When you register for the course, you will be able to select the first day of the course. Keep in mind that all courses are approximately 32 hours and will likely be multiple days. Currently, the courses are designed around a Monday through Thursday, 9am to 5pm schedule unless otherwise noted. Contact us for more information about our next available courses.

Blended e-Learning Basic Lifeguarding

For those lifeguard candidates that have schedules too busy or complicated to commit to the full classroom experience and have the discipline for self-study, the Blended e-Learning Lifeguard Class combines an online content delivery system with in-person skills and technique practice at Tigertail Lake with our Lifeguard Instructors.

Web-based content delivery lets the lifeguard candidate study the information required to become certified at their own pace and schedule, and they only need to come to the in-water sessions to learn and practice the techniques. Web based content is approximately 16 hours of slides and information, and students are expected to complete the web-based content before attending the in-water skill session.
In-water sessions are 20 hours of hands-on learning and are offered on the last weekend of every month (Saturday and Sunday). It is expected that a student commit to both days of the same weekend in order to complete their session, as each day will cover different topics and the speed and intensity of the session will be high. Students must show proof that the online portion has been completed before they will be permitted to attend the in-water skill session.

Successful completion of both the online portion and the 20 hours of in-water skill session is required for certification.

These skill sessions include a review of the skills, including hands-on training and demonstrations.  Blended courses are offered once a month, with in-water skill sessions taking place on the last Saturday and Sunday of each month. The expectation is that students will attend the in-water skill session on the same month as they have taken the online coursework.  It is strongly recommended that students register for the course at least two weeks before the two-day in-water skill session to allow sufficient time to complete the online coursework.

To successfully complete this course you must:

  • Complete the online coursework.
  • Complete the two-day in-water skill session to the satisfaction of the instructor.
