Science and Mathematics

"If others would but reflect on mathematical truths as deeply and as continuously as I have, they would make my discoveries."
-- Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855)

General Resources

Community of Science
The Community of Science is designed to help you identify and locate researchers with interests and expertise similar to your own. It contains an on-line inventory of researchers, inventions, and facilities at leading U.S. and Canadian universities, and other R & D organizations. The Community of Science contains over 40,000 first-person expertise records, 5,000 inventions records, and 2,000 facilities records.

Profiled here are African American men and women who have contributed to the advancement of science and engineering.
Science Daily
Each day, ScienceDaily brings the breaking news about the latest discoveries and research projects in everything from astrophysics to zoology. Contains many links to other science sites.
Linux Software for Scientists
"An alphabetized and annontated list of scientific software for systems running Linux. With the GNU Fortran compiler (g77) now released, almost anything written in Fortran (as well as anything written in C using the GCC compiler) can now be compiled and executed on a Linux box without either mortgaging the homestead or selling the first born for a compiler..."
A similar list: Scientific Software for Linux has the software categorized rather than alphabetized.

Maple Home Page
Maple is a Computer Algebra System (CAS) originally developed by members of the Symbolic Computation Group (SCG) at the University of Waterloo.
The Math Forum
Our goal is to build a community that can be a center for teachers, students, researchers, parents, educators, citizens at all levels who have an interest in mathematics education. Be sure to select Selected Math resources by Subject for a very well organized view of some excellent resources for Mathematics.

Fractal pictures & animations
A fractal is a rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a reduced-size copy of the whole. Fractals are generally self-similar and independent of scale. These often beautiful and unusual shapes can be described as mathematical structures. This site contains many examples of fractals -- particularly interesting is the Fractal Movie Archive of Fractal animations in a variety of formats.
