Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

Ultrasound Job Outlook

A nationwide shortage of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and Cardiac Sonographers creates excellent local and national employment opportunities. The forecast is particularly bright for graduates of Broward College’s accredited educational program. Its exceptional combination of integrated academic and clinical experience provides a strong foundation for achieving full professional credentials and diagnostic proficiency.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, “Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016 as the population grows and ages, increasing the demand for diagnostic imaging and therapeutic technology. In addition to job openings from growth, some job openings will arise from the need to replace sonographers who leave the occupation permanently.”

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that in May 2008 the median annual earnings of diagnostic medical sonographers were $62,660. (Salaries for new graduates will lower - in the low to middle $50,000s).

Salaries vary depending on years of experience, credentials/certifications held, number of specialties practiced, as well as geographic location. There are opportunities for full-time and part-time employment.
