About Fire Science Tech Department:

About Fire Science Tech Department:

Broward College offers an Associate in Science degree in Fire Science. The degree is composed of 60 credits (20 classes worth 3 credits each). Half the classes are in Fire Science and half are in "General Education" (classes like English, Math, Government, Humanities, etc.). Many of the courses are available online.

Important Points:

  • If you are not yet a working fire fighter, before taking our program you should get your EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certificate (available at Broward College, 954-201-6920, www.broward.edu/emt) and also complete a state certified Fire Academy, such as the Broward Fire Academy (754-321-1300, www.bfa.edu). While you can be hired as a firefighter with the EMT certificate and the Fire Academy (Basic Firefighter) certificate, a Paramedic certificate is also typically required before you can be hired as a fire fighter in Broward County. A Paramedic certificate program is taken after you get your EMT certificate.
  • The Fire Science degree program is designed for working firefighters seeking job advancement. Our program prepares firefighters to take the Florida state certification exam for Municipal Fire Officer 1 or 2 or for Fire Inspector 1 or 2 or for Arson Investigator.

If you have questions about the BC Fire Science program, e-mail our Fire Science Program Manager Ernie Fontan at efontan@broward.edu or call him at 954-201-6798 or 954-201-6791. Good luck!!
