Communication Skills for Non-Native English Speakers
Course Description:
This course is designed to help non-native speakers of English to gain
proficiency in speaking and listening communication skills encountered
in academic situations. It is also designed to guide students toward applying
pronunciation, phrasing, intonation, stress, and rhythm of oral American
English to communication in social as well as employment settings. We
begin the course with a brief review of the pronunciation of American
English and then proceed with a series of interviews, discussions and
oral presentations utilizing the oral skills covered in class. The Prerequisite
for the course is EAP 0300 or department approval Thirteen (I 3) HOURS
OF LAB ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS COURSE. I will provide you with a hand-out
outlining what you will need to accomplish in the tab. This class is the
type of course which will provide you with skills which you can certainly
use in everyday situations. For this reason, you must complete all assignments
in order to achieve a satisfactory level of proficiency.
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend every class. If a class is missed, the
student is responsible for being prepared for the subsequent class. This
may mean contacting another student or the instructor to determine what
preparation is necessary for the upcoming class. All students are expected
to arrive on time. Three incidences of lateness will count as one absence.
A student is allowed to miss no more than 6 hours, regardless of whether
the absence is excused or unexcused.
