EAP0485

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This six-credit intermediate/advanced course is designed to principally guide the students to the mastery of complex grammar and sentence structures and basic paragraph writing. Included are extensive writing and reading assignments to prepare students for EAP1540
(intermediate composition) The requirement to move to the next level (EAP1540) is a “C” or better. With a “D” or “F”, a student must repeat EAP1540. In addition , the student must also have completed EAP0300 and EAP0320 before entering into EAP1540. Thirteen hours of lab are required for this course. The student’s grade will drop one letter for every hour of lab time that has been missed.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY AND METHODOLOGY:

I will explain the whole language approach used in this course and review available research which supports the validity of this approach. Mastery can only be achieved through intensive in-class and out-of-class practice. Students are expected to do all in-class and out-of-class assignments to achieve satisfactory levels of proficiency. All graded writing assignments will be assigned and completed during class time in order to guarantee validity. In accomplishing course objectives, the instructor will incorporate individual assignments, small task groups, discussions, library research and other in-class assignments. The lion share of the in-class writing assignments will be utilized in the completion of a term project. I will meet with each student individually to discuss his/her chosen topic and the related reading and research material in order to successfully complete the project.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are expected to attend each class. A STUDENT IS ALLOWED TO MISS ONLY 6 HOURS OF CLASS TIME, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE ABSENCE IS EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED. If a class is missed, the student is responsible for being prepared for the subsequent class. This means contacting a group member or the instructor to determine appropriate assignments; therefore, it is a good idea to get a few of your classmate’s phone numbers for your reference.
