COURSE OVERVIEW:

This three credit intermediate composition course is principally designed to guide the students to the mastery of paragraph structure using various paragraph modes. The course also provides an introduction to the multiparagraph essay. The grammar covered in this course will be related to elements which closely tie in with composition, eg, connectors and sentence combining. We will also review grammar issues as they arise in your written work. Thirteen hours of lab are required for this course. The student’s grade will drop one letter grade for every hour of lab time that has been missed.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY AND METHODOLOGY:

In accomplishing the course objectives, students are expected to do all in-class and out-of-class assignments to achieve satisfactory levels of proficiency. In order to accomplish these objectives, the instructor will incorporate individual assignments, small task groups, discussions, and other in-class assignments. The instructor will also work individually with each student monitoring his/her writing progress with advice and suggestions for improving his/her skills. Some of the graded writing assignments will be typed and completed in class while others will be hand-written during class time.

ATTENDANCE Students are expected to attend each class. After four (4) contact hours of permitted absences, students are subject to administrative withdrawal from the class. If a class is missed, the students are responsible for being prepared for the subsequent class. This may mean contacting a fellow classmate or the instructor to determine appropriate assignments; therefore, it is a good idea to establish a method to contact a few of your classmates outside of class time.
