Dr. Beaton-Garcia has been at Broward College since 2009, first as full-time faculty librarian, and as an adjunct for the liberal arts. In 2014, she joined BC Online as a Senior Instructional Designer. A few years later, she returned to Central Campus as Associate Dean of Public Services for the University/College Library then served as the Dean for Libraries and Academic Success Centers. In that role, she had oversight of the College's joint-use libraries on three main campuses, as well as the Academic Success Centers, which provide in-person and online tutoring, subject-specific labs, and testing centers to help students achieve their academic goals. Dr. Sunem Beaton-Garcia most recently served as the Interim President of Central Campus & Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning, then as President of North Campus & Vice Provost of Academic Services.

She has served the community in various capacities, including several boards—PACE Center for Girls Broward, Broward County Public Library Foundation, and the National Community College Hispanic Council Board of Directors. Before joining Broward College, Dr. Beaton-Garcia worked in the Information Technology industry and various educational organizations providing strategic oversight in training and development. She earned a master's in Information Science from the University of South Florida, and a doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University.
