Teaching Philosophy

The preferred means of communication of my students is texting. Many texts have no punctuation, no sentence structure, no style, and no grammar. Moreover, when they enter the college they become part of a sea of numbers which further alienates them from form and content in writing. My task is to elicit their curiosity about their writing. I seek to get them to compare their modes of expression with writers of excellence. I also imbue the conversation in class with some salt of wit. Then with as many as take responsibility for their destiny I make an attempt to read rough drafts in my office, on Skype, or on FaceTime. In this way they have a chance to become individuals who can think for themselves.
