Broward College and the Rosemary Duffy Larson are pleased to present Transitions, opening to the public on Monday, August 24, 2026, featuring works of sculpture by one of our very own: Israel "Isi" Ghelman, whose thirteen years at BC make him a fixture in our learning community and a dear member of our artistic family. Of his work, Ghelman states:
"Moore, Brancusi, Hepworth and Noguchi are among my favorite sculptors. All expressions of art attract me. I am a musician; theater and literature fascinate me. But when working on three-dimensional projects, my spirit is especially elated.
The background to my sculpture practice could be curiosity and fondness of handwork. My father [a tailor] used to say that I always wanted to know "where the feet of everything were born from." Objects have their special kind of life. Tools and machines have their own language.
After many years of being a spectator of art, I decided to be a creator; not only to see but also to express my ideas and feelings through art.
I want to acknowledge my gratitude to my first mentor, Venezuelan artist Daniel Briceño, and to Professor Emeritus Catherine Leisek for her support and advice."
Drawing inspiration from Modernist sculpture, Ghelman's work in stone, wood, metals, and found objects assumes a contemporary language all its own. Timeless materials of the natural world juxtapose against the synthetic and manmade to create a collaboration between artist and material, form and meaning.
Please join us for the opening reception and artist lecture on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 4 - 7 p.m. to enjoy fine refreshments, stimulating art, and enlightening conversation with the artist himself beginning at 5 p.m. The exhibition will run through Saturday, September 26, 2026.

The South Gallery is thrilled to announce a solo exhibition titled Here They Come by local artist Carlos Solorzano. The show will open on Wednesday, September 16, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
"They have been here for thousands of years. Their presence has been recognized by some, hidden in plain sight, manipulated, and often ridiculed."
Solorzano drew inspiration for the title of his exhibition from the song of the same name by Ten Years After, which he heard in his youth.
In Here They Come, Solorzano showcases a varied collection of works on paper and canvas that invite the viewer to explore the spaces between the seen and the unseen. The show will feature surreal abstractions drawn from the occult, science fiction, comics, and the artist's personal experiences. Solorzano's "intention is not to portray conventional imagery in earthy acrylics or inks, but rather to blend textures, colors, and fluid forms that suggest and reinterpret a small, temporary vortex on canvas or paper."
Solorzano, who originally hails from Venezuela, was influenced greatly by the Realism of the old masters and the imagination of the Surrealists, such as Max Ernst and H. R. Giger. He studied at the Pittsburgh Art Institute and at the Instituto de Diseño de Caracas. Currently, in addition to exhibiting his work throughout Florida, Solorzano is a resident artist at The Studio 18 Complex in Pembroke Pines.
Here They Come will run at The South Gallery until November 12, 2026.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition and participate in the opening reception, where they can meet the artist and gain insights into his creative process and the inspiration behind his work.

Casey has been struggling with food addictions and body dysmorphia her entire life. While writing down her umpteenth resolution to lose weight, a wild journey commences that has Casey in direct communication with the 'forbidden foods', put on trial for crimes committed, and conflicting well-being solutions thrown at her. At odds with her former and future selves, Casey wonders if she will ever forge a path to wellness. An absurdist comedy about the pain we hold ourselves in by comparing our insides to other people's outsides.
