This course is designed to enhance the clinical decision making and assessment skills of the critical care and emergency department specialty nurse who works with all types of adult critically-ill patients through analysis of a variety of challenging 12-Lead ECGs and case studies. With the numerous advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and other related cardiac disorders. The specialty nurse must be able to quickly recognize abnormalities on the 12-Lead ECG and notify the physician for appropriate intervention.

Course Description

Classes are designed to enhance learning for licensed healthcare professionals using this nontraditional teaching format. Designed to provide the learner with skills necessary to analyze a specific number of basic ECG rhythms at a basic introductory level. It is vital for members of the healthcare profession caring for patients with abnormal heart rhythms to be able to recognize the common arrhythmias. The American Heart Association's ACLS guidelines are referenced throughout the course content.

Course Description

Critical Care Nursing is designed to target entry level critical care nurses incorporating the principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, assessment and management. The course provides instruction on how to care for high acuity patients.

The focus is on caring for patients with cardiovascular, pulmonary, hemodynamic, neurologic, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, hematologic and multisystem disorders. Content includes the on-line Essentials of Critical Care Orientation modules from the American Association of Critical-Care Nursing. Lecturers present case studies, facilitate group discussions, and critical thinking exercises. Additional on-line activities are available through Desire 2 Learn.

The Nursing Simulation Lab course is conducted in a simulation lab where the nurse is expected to demonstrate assessment skills and patient management on a Human Patient Simulator. Students are required to demonstrate that they can evaluate signs and symptoms, intervene and evaluate if the selected treatments have been effective.

Course Description

The Introduction to Emergency Nursing's 95 hour theory course provides the basic didactic content for those interested in entering the field of emergency nursing. This blended course is based on the core curriculum for ED nurses from the Emergency Nurses Association, and includes the ENAs on-line learning modules combined with studied cases, critical thinking exercises and a review of skills necessary for patient stabilization and management. Special modules include cardiac care, respiratory care, stroke car, triage, psychiatric emergencies and non-violent crisis intervention.

Course Description

​Hemodynamic Day is incorporated into the Critical Care Nursing course. Participants who wish to join the group should have previous clinical experience in at least Tele or Progressive Care areas. Concepts discussed are about blood motion and equilibrium.
The day’s activities include a three-hour lecture/presentation on cardiac and pulmonary anatomy & physiology as they relate to central lines. Then participants rotate to hands-on skills stations for arterial lines, pulmonary artery catheters, central venous lines and cardiac output. Nursing care, assessments, interventions and outcomes are correlated with what is observed on the monitors.
This is not a beginning nursing course. In order to optimize learning we ask participants to have reviewed tutorials or articles on Hemodynamic Monitoring. To receive the certificate, the participant must attend the full day’s activities.

This program prepares students to perform EKG's and includes information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. This comprehensive 50 hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam and other National Certification Exams. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG machine, the normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead placement and other clinical practices.

This 100 hour Veterinary Assistant program introduces students to the exciting and growing field of veterinary medicine. Students will learn about the care of animals as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, as well as how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking, and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office. ​Course Description
This onsite class teaches how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use of automated external defibrillators (AED) and how to relieve airway obstruction following American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines. Basic rescuer training is intended to provide the student with information about prudent heart living, prevention of unnecessart death from heart attack, signals and actions for survival as well as mastery of the skills involved in cpr 1 & 2 person, obstructed airway and infant cpr. The student should be prepared to take both written and manikin performance tests. This course is acceptable for retraining for basic rescuer levels only.

Course Description

The Medical Assistant course prepares students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, pharmacology, taking and documenting vital signs, technical aspects of phlebotomy, the 12-lead EKG and the cardiac life cycle.

Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED.

This program prepares students for a position as a Personal Care Assistant. Emphasis is on assistance with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, eating, bathroom, housekeeping and laundry, medication reminders/management, recreational activities; assistance with minor medical tasks; companionship; transportation.

Prerequisite: High School Diploma or GED and a current Basic Life Support card from American Heart Association.

Refund Policy
To cancel a class, please drop the class from your schedule two full business days prior to the scheduled class for a full refund. No refunds will occur after the class has started. No shows do not constitute a cancellation. Students who register and pay in full for an educational activity, but do not attend, forfeit the entire registration fee. Online classes are not refundable once the student’s registration has been processed and payment received.

Cancellation Policy
The Workforce Education and Economic Development department reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any educational activity due to an insufficient number of registrants or for any reason deemed necessary. If a program is cancelled by The Workforce Education and Economic Development Departments, a full refund will be provided.

Certificates
A certificate will be given to all participants who have completed the course and registration requirements. The certificates will be given out by the faculty member at the end of the last class session. Be sure to get your certificate at the conclusion of the course. Participants must attend the entire offering. Partial hours/credit can not be given. Late arrival or early departure will result in the loss of all hours/credit.
Note: There is a $5 charge for duplicate certificates.

Attendance
Attendance is mandatory on all scheduled course dates. Late arrival or early departure may result in a loss of money paid for the course; student will receive a non satisfactory grade for the course.

Schedule/Room Changes
In the event a class is canceled or rescheduled, changes in room assignment, as well as those marked "TBA," will be posted at the class location.

Miscellaneous Information
When attending courses, you will be expected to provided your professional license number, along with a #2 pencil and a pen for signing the attendance sheet. A sweater may be needed for your comfort. If textbooks are required, they will be available at the bookstore located on the central campus in building 19. Offerings listed online are subject to change.
