Multi-Factor Authentication: Your Digital Bodyguard

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) |

In today's digital world, protecting your personal information is more important than ever—especially as a college student. At Broward College, students regularly access online platforms like D2L, BC One Access, and email accounts that hold sensitive academic and personal data. To protect this information, Broward College uses Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), a security measure that goes beyond the traditional password to help ensure your identity is verified before granting access.
Important Note: Security questions (e.g., "What's your mother's maiden name?") are no longer considered a valid or secure second factor. They can often be guessed, found online, or bypassed entirely, which is why Broward College uses stronger methods like app-based verification through Microsoft Authenticator.
What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?
Multi-Factor Authentication is a security process that requires users to provide two or more verification methods before gaining access to an account. The idea is simple: instead of just relying on a single method, MFA adds extra protection by combining multiple types of credentials, such as:
Something you have (e.g., your phone or an authentication app)
Something you know (e.g., your password)
For Broward College students, faculty, and staff, this usually means entering a password and then confirming a notification on your phone via the Microsoft Authenticator app or OneLogin Protect app.
Why is MFA Important?
Protects Personal and Academic Information
MFA significantly reduces the chances of unauthorized access to your Broward College accounts. This helps protect:
Academic records
Financial aid details
Course materials and submissions
Personal emails and communications
A single password can be guessed, stolen, or leaked—but with MFA, a hacker would also need access to your phone or device to log in.
Prevents Phishing and Identity Theft
Cybercriminals often use phishing scams to trick students into giving away passwords. Even if a scammer gets your password, MFA acts as a second lock. Without the second factor, the stolen password is useless.
Ensures Compliance with College Security Policies
As part of its cybersecurity strategy, Broward College follows best practices recommended by federal guidelines and accrediting bodies. Using MFA helps the college maintain a secure digital environment for students, staff, and faculty alike. For more information, review Broward College's Policies and Procedures.
Protects You Beyond College
Getting used to MFA now can help you form smart habits for future workplaces. Many employers and financial institutions also use MFA to protect accounts. Understanding and using MFA today means you’re more prepared for tomorrow.
Tips for Using MFA at Broward College
Download Microsoft Authenticator (students) or OneLogin Protect App (Faculty & Staff) from the App Store or Google Play and link it to your BC account
Keep your mobile device secure with a PIN, fingerprint, or face ID
Back up your MFA settings if you change or lose your device
Watch for phishing emails that ask for personal information—Broward College will never ask for your password via email
Multi-Factor Authentication is not just a security tool—it is a digital safety net that protects your academic, personal, and professional journey. By enabling MFA, Broward College is ensuring that all our users can study, communicate, and manage their academic and work life with confidence and peace of mind. It is a small step that makes a big difference.
Stay secure. Stay smart. Use MFA.
