Mar. 22 - Sept 12, 2024
Opening Reception: Mar. 22, 6 - 9 p.m.
Sequential art is frequently restricted to the spaces found in comic book stores and conventions since it is not typically seen as a valid art form. However, because this kind of art uses visual cues to convey a certain narrative, it requires highly developed design and sketching abilities, which are also used in more conventionally recognized and appreciated art forms. It also necessitates a thorough understanding of both cinematography and creative writing. Every sequential artist takes years of concentrated dedication and persistence to establish their unique voice and style.
As a part of the gallery's Curator's Co-Lab program, exhibiting artist and lecturer Eduardo Rosas has organized this group art exhibition, which showcases nine emerging South Florida artists who specialize in narrative illustration. The artwork in Borders and Gutters deviates from the popular trope of superheroes and villains. Instead, it will feature pieces that draw from the underground world of Sequential Art, where the actions of each of the nine artists' distinctively rendered characters explore actual human truths and personal experiences.
Viewers will gain insight into the comic book creation process, distinct stylistic approaches, and—above all—the creative possibilities of the medium and practice through this exhibition.
Additionally, some of the exhibiting artists will be doing four separate free on-campus story illustration workshops throughout the semester, which will coincide with the show. Details will be available in the Gallery's Instagram (@bcsouthcampusart).

Chao Ding: LEFTOVER
Exhibition Hours
Opening Reception: August 29, 4 - 7 p.m.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Wednesday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
In "LEFTOVER," Chao Ding reveals the unusual beauty and poetic significance of deserted spaces through his expressive painting. In mundane scenes of quiet places and exploration of negative space, Ding finds narrative possibilities in a silent dialogue of human absence. Through this imagery that expresses feelings of isolation and displacement, he seeks to create quiet moments of reflection in our fast-paced world, so that new connections may be made.
Chao Ding is a Beijing-native perceptual painter now living and working in Sacramento, California. He received his MFA from Louisiana State University after completing his BA at Beijing University of Technology and postgraduate coursework at SUNY Buffalo State College. Ding's work has been shown in both solo and group exhibitions nationally, including a commission for documentary art from the Burden Rural Life Museum. His residencies include New York's Golden Foundation and the Vermont Studio Center, and his work is represented by Elliott Fouts Gallery.

In "Things Look Bright All Over," Clyman explores the history of three noteworthy Broward County locations: the Two-Million Dollar Banyan, the Sunrise Upside-Down House, and the Hollywood Beach Hotel. Through mixed media paintings, sculptures, prints, and collected ephemera, portions of the life cycles of these iconic places are resurrected for viewers to reflect upon the rapidly shifting South Florida culture and landscape. The exhibition's title draws inspiration from vintage Florida tourism ads, and the depicted sites showcase the intricate relationship South Florida maintains with its reputation as a vacation paradise. This exhibition is made possible with support from the Broward County Cultural Division.
Mixed-media artist Angelica Clyman resides and works in her home city of Hollywood, Florida. Her paintings, sculptures, and prints represent South Florida locations in both past and present. Through her work, she seeks to find a sense of place, history, and understanding in a landscape that is changing quickly. Her work is included in the Miami Children's Museum's permanent collection, and her solo shows include Land of Sunshine (IS Projects) and Beyond Reflection (Art Center/ South Florida, now Oolite Arts). She holds degrees from Florida International University (MFA) and the New World School of the Arts (BFA). In addition to serving as the Director for the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery at Broward College, Central Campus, Clyman also teaches studio art courses.
More details will be available on the Gallery's Instagram (@bcsouthcampusart).

This production is free of charge and tickets are not necessary. The Foreigner will be presented live at the Performing and Cultural Arts Theatre on BC’s South Campus in Pembroke Pines.
Performed by Broward College theatre students, the play tells the story Charlie, an Englishman grieving the demise of his marriage who ends up in rural Georgia with his colorful friend, Froggy. Desiring to withdraw from all present company lest he have to talk about his situation, Charlie pretends to be a foreigner who doesn’t speak or understand English. During his stay he is privy to a host of characters who believe he cannot comprehend them and consequently divulge dark and sinister intentions that are hostile to minorities. A collection of charming and magnanimous locals become involved, and before long our antagonists are exposed for the laughable and ridiculous characters they are.
While tickets to the event are free, donations will be accepted. For more information contact theatre@broward.edu.
