Faculty Visibility Campaign: Project Description
The #firstgenproud campaign* is a college-wide, collaborative student success project targeting first-generation students (FGS) at Broward College (BC). Specifically, we are focused on connecting students with faculty who self-identify as first-generation college students or as supporters of our FGS population.
What are the project objectives and their relationship to learning outcomes?
The overall goal of the proposed project is to create and launch a college wide #firstgenproud campaign at Broward College. The campaign's objectives include:
- Foster a positive and welcoming college climate for FGS
- Raise visibility of first-gen faculty, faculty supporters, and FGS at BC
- Build lasting connections between FGS and faculty
- Facilitate FGS access to campus and college resources to help them succeed
- Build a community of faculty (both first-gen faculty and faculty supporters) focused on supporting FGS success
What is innovative about your project?
This is the first college wide collaborative success effort of this type at a two-year institution. This innovative effort would provide BC an additional mechanism to be part of a national conversation about FGS success in higher education. Furthermore, by implementing the campaign and assessing its effectiveness, we will have a direct impact on student integration and persistence. Targeting faculty and students as a means to enhance student success.
Which students will benefit? How will this benefit their learning or overall success? How will they be engaged in the project?
When students feel connected to faculty, it motivates them to work harder and be willing to ask for help. By providing faculty with resources for teaching and mentoring FGS and opportunities for faculty-student interaction, faculty can better support the needs of FGS and encourage access to academic success resources on campus. This visibility campaign will impact FGS success and persistence and enhance faculty access to best practices for teaching and mentoring FGS.
