The Broward College District Board of Trustees brings together five community leaders with diverse backgrounds who provide dedicated leadership to the College and its activities. The Governor of the State of Florida appoints this group of outstanding local citizens. As the governing board of the College, they are the stewards of BC’s commitment to excellence, while they guide the College and implement the goals enumerated in their mission statement. Their desire to provide students with the academic skills needed to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, to enhance skills to be competitive in the rapidly changing job market, and to offer opportunities for continuing education, personal growth and enrichment is a challenge they approach with enthusiasm. As a team, these dynamic community leaders are fully engaged in providing a future that offers increased higher education opportunities for Broward County residents.

Sean Alveshire, vice chair

Sean Alveshire works as director of business development for Stiles Corporation. Before joining Stiles Corporation, he founded and operated North Hills Productions, a television production and sports broadcasting company that produced sports programming for the Sunshine Network, Fox Network stations and local network affiliates. He also worked as a sports broadcaster for local and national radio and television outlets.


In 2003, he accepted a position with the Miami Dolphins, serving as a salary cap and contract analyst. In 2004, he accepted the position with Stiles Corporation, where he is Director of Business Development for Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. He currently serves as a member of the executive board of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County and the Regional Business Alliance. He is also the Chair-Elect for Trustees for the Association of Florida Colleges and sits on the National Public Policy committee for the Association of Community College Trustees.


His other involvement with education-related endeavors includes serving as chair of the 2009 William T. Dwyer Awards for Excellence in Education, which recognizes Palm Beach County’s top teaching professionals in elementary, middle and high schools as well as in career education and special education.


Alveshire is a graduate of Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in Communications with a concentration in broadcast journalism. He and his wife Denise live in Plantation.






John A. Benz
John A. Benz has worked for Memorial Healthcare System for more than 25 years in various capacities. In his current position, he is the Senior Vice President & Chief Strategic Officer.

With a financial background and a desire to serve the community, especially the disadvantaged and children, he has been able to help direct the activities of the Memorial Healthcare System and meet his personal goal to "make a difference."


He is an active member for community services and crisis intervention organizations such as:

• Florida Healthy Kids Corporation – Board Member (Treasurer)
• National Association of Public Hospitals – Past Chairman, Current Board Member
• 211-Broward – Past Chairman, Current Board Member
• The Coordinating Council of Broward – Past Chairman, Current Board Member
• Community Blood Centers of South Florida – Board Member (Vice Chairman)
• The Coalition for a Healthy South Broward – Member
• United Way of Broward County – Board Member

He holds a Masters Degree in business from Nova Southeastern University. He also is a Diplomat in the American College of Healthcare Executives and has completed a fellowship program offered by The Healthcare Forum.






Sean Guerin, chair
Mr. Guerin is a Fort Lauderdale native. He graduated from the Marist School, in Atlanta, and earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from Florida State University, Tallahassee.

Mr. Guerin's marketing and customer service expertise was developed in three extremely competitive industries. Initially working in professional sports, Sean played an integral roll in the Expansion Draft for the Florida Marlins Baseball Club. Following several years with the Marlins in Sales and Marketing, Sean was asked to join the sales team of Anheuser Busch. His success there afforded him the opportunity to become Director of Marketing for Boston Market's 75 stores in the northeast United States.

He and Britt Sikes founded U.S. Imaging Solutions, a document management company, in Davie in 1998. Guerin and Sikes now serve as the company’s co-CEOs.

Mr. Guerin is a co-chair of governmental affairs and an at-large member of the executive board of the Broward Workshop. He also is chairman of Preserve the American Dream, a Tampa-based organization based in Tampa that supports fiscal responsibility and efficient government. He was named recipient of a Sun-Sentinel Excalibur Award in 2004.






Elizabeth Tonkin
Elizabeth Tonkin has enjoyed a productive 30 year career in the healthcare industry. A registered nurse, Ms. Tonkin worked many different specialties and positions. Liz rose through the ranks to serve as a chief nursing officer or chief operating officer for several acute care facilities.

Liz spent 25 years with HCA, the largest healthcare system in the U.S. During her time there, she developed and implemented a business plan, which resulted in the creation of a national staffing company – All About Staffing (AAS). As Chief Executive Officer of AAS, Liz created a full service agency to meet the needs of HCA's hospital network. While servicing over 200 acute care facilities, she grew the organization to over $300 million in revenue.

Currently, Liz is President of MedPro Staffing, a JCAHO-certified, leading provider of temporary and contract staffing services to healthcare facilities throughout the United States. At MedPro, Liz oversees the orientation and professional development of foreign healthcare professionals to serve in hard-to-fill positions at facilities across the U.S. In addition, MedPro spends tens of thousands of dollars annually to support the continuing education of its healthcare professionals.





Pamela Stephany
Pamela Stephany is a native of Fort Lauderdale. She brings more than 30 years experience implementing complex global financial and investment strategies and structures for wealthy individuals, family offices, foundations and businesses within the United States and internationally, to the Board of Trustees. Ms. Stephany's most recent Florida appointment was on the Board of Directors of the Florida Prepaid College Plan ($9 billion under management). Before her retirement, Ms. Stephany served as the Deputy Manager of North America of Credit Suisse Private Advisors. She was Senior Vice President for Bank Julius Baer, and Vice President at Bank of Boston where she worked and lived in Southeast Asia and South America. She is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Foreign Service with a bachelor's degree in international finance and commerce. She has had leadership roles in The Explorers Club, a global organization concentrating on exploration and field science; the Broward Library Foundation; Rotary; and First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale.
