Students, staff step out to help fundraisers
Broward Community College staff and students figured prominently in a pair of major fundraising efforts in Broward County during the weekend of April 26-27.
On Saturday, April 26, a North Campus-based team represented the college in the March for Babies at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park. The event was a six-mile walk along the Atlantic Ocean that raised funds for the March of Dimes, an organization that aims to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality.
Members of Team BCC were: Rahkeem Bell, Peter Barbatis, Michael Bellantoni, Marla Bennett, Glenna Brewster, Barbara Bryan, Steadman Bryan, Nedia Calhow, Vieda Calhow, Vivian Choy, Edna Chun, Tacarra Cook, Edwina Dactuf, Jose Deleon, Giselle Dorset, Mally Espaillat, Zoila Espaillat, Greg Ferenchak, Rosetta Francis, Alex Gil, Casey Gilson, Joel Harris, Debra Hart, Greta Jackson, Karen Johnson, Cheryl Lafong, Leon Logon, Estefania Lopez, Tara-Isia Machado, Raymond Marcelon, Dean Mealy, Benoush Memari, Sarah Murr, Raul Nevarez, Stephanie Nueburt, Carolina Paredes, Farah Pierre, Nahid Quchani, Elizabeth Qunila, Monica Ramirez, Mario Rebac, Maire Rodriguez, Nicole Rodriguez, Norm Seavers, Jerry Schwartz, George Stalliard, Genice Stalliard, Jacqueline Stawicki, Esmerelda Sweeney, Farley Thermidor, Cindy Thuma, Octavian Wilson and Faith Wong.
Along with them were members of the North Campus Computer Club, and a group of students from the college’s award-winner Phi Beta Lambda chapter – Erica Anderson, Maria Rosa Blanco, Andrea Cruz, Maria Helen Cruz, Jordan Ever, Paige Ford, Omar Ghandi, Ashley Jalilyan, Daniel Ledesma, Ashford O’Neal, Steven Peterson, Sophia Rodriguez, Pablo Serp and their adviser, Cathy Montesarchio.
On Sunday, April 27, a collegewide team represented BCC in the Florida AIDS Walk 2008, a walkathon that started and ended at Huizenga Park in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Participants chose a 5K or 10K route starting at 10 a.m. The event’s opening ceremonies featured actor and comedian Mario Cantone from “Sex in the City.”
