Heritage Society

Once in a lifetime an opportunity comes along to create a lasting legacy

The Broward College Foundation extends an invitation to you to become a member of the Broward College Foundation Heritage Society. Members of the society are individuals in the community who have an interest in preserving and maintaining  higher education opportunities at Broward College by making a gift through their will as a bequest.

Your gift, through a bequest, will provide education opportunities not covered by tuition, fund scholarships for students, support quality instruction and augment special programs such as the Will and Jo Holcombe Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence.

Bequests are the main source of endowment support at Broward College. Each bequest contributes to the school's financial stability. This tradition of remembrance ensures there will be a viable, quality academic institution that reaches those in the greater community who might otherwise be excluded from higher education. It is an investment in Broward's future.

A bequest goes beyond funds for programs and services.  It is a way to:

  • Change lives for the better
  • Have a positive impact on the future
  • Affect the quality of life in our community
  • Continue the education and career success stories that begin in Broward College classrooms

Types of bequests

Assets of many kinds are welcomed at Broward College including cash, securities, and interest in real estate (such as a residence), tangible personal property (such as works of art or antiques), a portion of life insurance, or the remainder of your IRA, Keogh, tax sheltered annuity, qualified pension or profit-sharing plan. Ask your attorney about your bequest options.

Tax benefits

A bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit on the amount of the estate tax charitable deduction. In addition, bequests generally are not subject to state inheritance or estate taxes.

In a large estate, the savings can be more than half the value of the bequest.

How to make a bequest

A bequest to Broward College Foundation can be made by creating a new will, adding a codicil to your present will, or including Broward College in your revocable trust.

Sample of bequest language

The following examples can be tailored to your interests. Be sure to consult your attorney.

Unrestricted bequest: "I give (___dollars) (a specific asset) or (___percent of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate) to Broward College Foundation, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for its general purposes."

Bequest for a specific purpose: "I give (___dollars) (a specific asset) or (___percent of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate) to Broward College Foundation, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to be used for the following purposes: (state the purpose).  If in the future, it is the opinion of the Board of Directors of the Broward College Foundation that all or part of the income of this fund cannot be usefully applied to such a purpose, it may be used for any related purpose which in the opinion of the Board of Directors will most nearly accomplish my wishes."

For now

If you plan to make a bequest, think it through carefully.  Then meet with your attorney to discuss and update your will.

Please let the Broward College Foundation know when you have named Broward College in your will as a bequest. We would like to thank you for your generosity and give you recognition in the community.  If you prefer to remain anonymous, your gift will be kept confidential.
