Civic Engagement-Service Learning

The Holcombe Institute promotes Civic Engagement-Service Learning as one of its initiatives. Service Learning integrates meaningful community service with classroom instruction and reflection to

  • enrich the learning experience
  • teach civic responsibility
  • encourage lifelong civic engagement
  • strengthen communities.

The NEA Higher Education Thriving in Academe project suggests service learning is: "unique in its imperative to balance the educational need of students with the practical needs of the community." Read more about Service Learning in the Advocate's April 2006 issue of NEA Advocate Online.
