Dual Enrollment & Early Admissions

Dual Enrollment & Early Admissions

Start your college journey with dual enrollment classes or by registering as an early admissions student. These accelerated learning options allow eligible high school students to take college level courses while earning both high school and college credits at the same time!

Dual Enrollment

You will save both time and money on your college education since tuition, laboratory and student fees are waived for program participants. Textbook fees are also waived for public school students.  Students enrolled in private high schools and home education programs are responsible for the costs of all textbooks/instructional materials.

Early Admissions

Students interested in the early admission dual enrollment option can enroll full-time in college during their senior year. You must complete two consecutive terms carrying 12 college-level credit hours each term, and maintain an unweighted college grade point average of 2.0 in order to receive your high school diploma.  Textbooks are available on a "loan" basis from the college bookstore, and matriculation fees are waived for a maximum of 24 credit hours. Early Admission students work with a designated advisor to discuss course selection, college placement testing and high school graduation requirements.

Eligibility

To be eligible for dual enrollment or early admissions, you must have an unweighted high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better. Other eligibility requirements may apply.

Courses are offered at Broward College's campus locations throughout the county and at your high school as well. Class times are tailored to fit into your hectic schedule.

For more information about dual enrollment and early admissions, contact a Broward College advisor or your high school's BRACE advisor.

College Academy

College Academy is a joint venture between The School Board of Broward County and Broward College. Located at BC’s Central Campus, College Academy, offers high school juniors enrolled as full-time students in the program the opportunity to receive a high school diploma from The School Board of Broward County, Florida and an Associate in Arts (AA) degree from Broward College. Additionally, students are afforded the opportunity to qualify for the State of Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program.

The College Academy is designed for students who have the maturity required for college campus life and the academic ability to handle the rigor of college work. Both high school and dual enrollment courses are taught on the BC Central Campus. Students take between 12-18 college credits during the fall and winter terms, and approximately six college credits during Session I of the summer term. Students must maintain a 2.5 unweighted grade point average in order to remain at the College Academy.

Accelerated Learning for Adults

Prior Learning Assessment Program

The Prior Learning Assessment Program, developed primarily for working adults, is designed to recognize the academic value of what students have learned through experiences outside the college classroom. Credit for Prior Learning Assessments may result from:
  • Travel
  • Military service
  • Volunteer work
  • Work experience
  • Intensive self-directed study
  • Employment-related training programs and seminars
If students have gained BC course-equivalent knowledge, competencies, and/or skills as a result of learning experiences, they may be able to earn academic credit through the Prior Learning Assessment Program.

Assessment Process
The assessment process is sometimes referred to as "challenging a course." The assessment may involve one or more of the following:
  • Written or performance tests
  • Preparation of a portfolio that describes student learning and how it was acquired
  • Evaluation of student certificates and licenses
  • Interviews with faculty members
The College faculty members responsible for the courses for which students wish to receive credit determine the method of assessment.

Cost
Students who receive permission to challenge a course from an authorized faculty assessor must pay the required assessment fees and satisfactorily pass a faculty-administered learning assessment before credit can be awarded. The assessment fees may vary but are generally $7 per credit hour. For example, the assessment fee for a 3 credit course is $21.

Timeline
The assessment process may take from several hours to several months, depending upon the amount of credit requested and methods of assessment required. When the process is completed, assessment results will be forwarded to the Director for Academic Affairs, who verifies that assessment documentation is complete and informs the College Registrar's office of the amount of credit the student has earned.

Assessments are generally not scheduled between semesters or during the first or the last week of each semester. Results of assessments initiated during the last week of any semester may not be posted to student transcripts for that semester. Students who wish to use Prior Learning Assessment credits to satisfy same-semester graduation requirements, course load requirements, transfer requirements, or registration pre-requisites should plan to complete their assessments well before the end of the semester in which they want the credits to be posted.

Prior Learning Assessment credits appear on student transcripts as “CR.” Letter grades are not awarded for Prior Learning Assessments.

Limitations
Prior Learning Assessment credits are not available for all BC courses. Students who have been admitted to BC, and who have decided on an academic program, may challenge courses through the Prior Learning Assessment Program. Students can obtain information and Prior Learning Assessment application forms from the academic department(s) responsible for the course(s) that the student wishes to challenge.

Although there is no limit to the number of hours that students can receive through Prior Learning Assessment Program, 25 percent of credits required for a degree must be earned by taking classes at BC.

How To Get Started
Students can obtain information and Prior Learning Assessment Program forms from the academic department(s) responsible for the course(s) that the student wishes to challenge.

Armed Forces Education Experiences

Upon request from students who are currently enrolled in degree or certificate programs, Broward College will conduct an evaluation of educational experiences in the Armed Forces and award postsecondary level credits at the freshman and/or sophomore levels when appropriate. The evaluation procedure will be comprised of two categories of military experiences. TYPE I will be the evaluation of military courses listed in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Forces, American Council on Education.  The Registrar will receive and evaluate petitions for military courses in the same manner as other incoming transfer credits.  TYPE II will be the evaluation of other military training and experiences by the Department of Experiential Learning.  The standard fee for the assessment of experiential learning will be applied to TYPE II evaluations.

A. The evaluation of military courses, TYPE I experiences, will be administered by the Registrar.  Students will provide appropriate evidence of successful completion of courses and sufficient course descriptions to identify specific courses in the appropriate volume of the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.  Only courses equivalent to lower division college courses and only courses that are appropriate for credits in an academic program offered by BC will be considered.  Such courses, when possible, will be classified as equivalent to a specific BC course and will be assigned a corresponding common course number. Other credits that cannot be equated to a specific course will be described as electives in the discipline area and may be used as substitute for BCC BC courses only when authorized by the appropriate academic department.

B. TYPE II military training and experiences will be processed by the Department of Experiential Learning upon request by the student or upon referral of unidentifiable military courses by the College Registrar.  Evaluations will be conducted by the academic department responsible for the discipline area.  All credits awarded for TYPE II experiential learning will be classified and given corresponding BC course numbers.  Upon approval by the Department of Experiential Learning and payment of special fees by the students, the Office of the Registrar will record such credits on the appropriate academic records.

C. Students will be responsible for obtaining and providing authentic records that fully document educational experiences in the armed forces.  The College official responsible for the award of academic credits must be satisfied that the documents are official and represent a true and correct record of the military courses or experiences that are presented for evaluation.

D. Special forms may be prepared by the Registrar and Department of Experiential Learning to facilitate the administration of the evaluation process.

E. Although there will be no maximum number of credits that may be awarded by the College for military courses and experiences, students must satisfy the usual 24 credit 25 percent program residency rule for degrees and the equivalent pro rata portion of that requirement for Certificate programs.  Up to 8 credits of the required 24 credits of 25 percent program residency may be earned through the award of TYPE II experiences.  The award of TYPE I credits for courses transferred to the College will not count toward residency.

How To Get Started
Make an appointment with an academic advisor to begin the evaluation process. Remember to bring official records that document military courses and experiences.
