Public Safety College Degree Programs:

The Broward College Institute of Public Safety offers college degrees or certificates in two areas: Criminal Justice and Fire Science.

Criminal Justice
Students in classroom.The Criminal Justice Associate of Science Program prepares you to work in the exciting field of law enforcement. Our instructors have all worked in the field and include police chiefs, detectives, judges and lawyers.
Degree programs include:
 
 
 
Criminal Justice Emphasis
 
Receive a well-rounded education in law enforcement. Courses include criminal law, juvenile justice, corrections, terrorism and domestic security and emergency management.
 
 
 
Polygraph Emphasis
 
Learn to detect deception. The Polygraph track features courses on how to structure polygraph interviews and interrogation questions, and how to analyze charts and test results.
 
 
 
Crime Scene Technology Emphasis
 
The Crime Scene track teaches you how to conduct crime scene investigations (CSI). Training is offered in crime scene techniques, forensic photography and visual documentation, and criminal evidence and court procedure.
 
All three tracks share the same core curriculum, some of which include:
 
·         Constitutional Law (police powers)
 
·         Psychology or Sociology
 
·         Basic Speech Communications or Public Speaking
 
Each track requires 64 credits total, including the core curriculum, for an associate degree.
 
Several specialty courses are taught in our Crime Laboratory giving you valuable hands-on experience. A co-op program allows you to do internships with local law enforcement and social service agencies.
 
Our program gets you ready for a variety of jobs, including:
 
·         Police officer
 
·         Deputy sheriff
 
·         Polygraph specialist
 
·         US Customs inspector
 
·         Crime scene technician
 
·         State police/state trooper
 
·         Corrections officer (jail/prison)
 
·         Community/police service aide
 
·         US Immigration and Naturalization inspector
 
Criminal Justice Degrees & Certificate
Fire Science Technology

The Fire Science Technology Associate of Science Program is designed for current fire service or fire protection-related professionals to improve their technical competencies and to prepare them for career advancement by qualifying them for Fire Service state certification exams. The program provides options for concentrated study including:
 
·         Fire Officer
·         Fire Investigator
·         Fire Inspector
 
Courses are offered in a series of required three- credit courses that prepare students for State Fire Officer I, Municipal Fire Inspector I, or Fire Investigator I certification.
 
Students may also choose to do the Broward College certificate program, Fire Science Management Certificate.  This certificate is composed of 5 classes (15 credits).  These five classes may be applied to the AS degree in Fire Science.

If you are not a firefighter and would like to become one, before taking our program you should get your EMT and Paramedic certifications (available at Broward College, 954-201-6290, www.broward.edu/healthsciences ) and complete a state certified Fire Academy, such as the Broward Fire Academy (754-321-1300). The EMT certificate and Fire Academy (Basic Firefighter) certificate are required before you can be hired as a firefighter in Broward County.  Also, most newly hired firefighters also have the Paramedic certificate.
