Play Out Your Dreams On or Behind the Stage

Directors, actors, stage managers, set designers, costume and makeup artists undergo a tremendous process to entertain an audience. From constant rehearsals to set, light and costume re-designs, there’s no doubt that the process of producing quality theatre requires disciplined, collaborative professionals. With Broward College’s Theatre program, you will gain valuable knowledge and skills that will lay the foundation for a successful future in acting or theatre production.

If you have an affinity for the theatre and want to brush up your acting chops without enrolling in a degree program, we invite you to participate in our theatre program by taking an introductory class, such as Acting I. Contact the Visual & Performing Arts Department to enroll today!

Theatre Curricula

There are two important elements to a successful Theatre program and career: ensemble and process. Our unending belief in the importance of ensemble in both the academic program and the production process is the cornerstone of our philosophy and curriculum. We believe respect for all members of the ensemble is essential. The performing arts are a process, an unfolding, a revelation, a lesson in now. To be an effective and productive participant in the theatre program at Broward College, you must be willing to:

  • Take on responsibility
  • Strive to embrace self esteem
  • Be a contributing member to a team
  • Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times

Courses revolve around the art of acting and producing a performance, with associate’s degrees offered in Theatre Performance and Technical Theatre. Our curriculum offers instruction that can prepare you for a bachelor’s degree program, and has resulted in former students getting accepted to theatre programs at the New World School of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, Florida International University and Florida Atlantic University. Courses you will enroll in as a Theatre student include:

  • Acting I and II
  • Acting on Film
  • Stage Makeup
  • Stagecraft
  • Movement for the Actor
  • Theatre History
  • Introduction to Voice
  • Introduction to Lighting Design
  • Capstone Project

The Theatre faculty educates and illuminates the minds, bodies and souls of our students. Members include graduates of the University of Florida and the Actors Studio at New School University. Instructors have worked on stage and behind the scenes with the Miami Opera and Coconut Grove Playhouse. Some professors have been honored with awards and distinctions, such as the Blockbuster Entertainment Endowed Teaching Chair and the Actors Studio Shubert Scholarship for Excellence. Several acting instructors are members of the Screen Actors Guild and Actors’ Equity Association.

Performance & Production Opportunities

Broward College is home to two performance arts venues utilized by the Theatre Department: The Fine Arts Theatre and Bailey Hall, both located on Central Campus in Davie. At the end of the semester, your studies may culminate in a production held at one of these facilities. Continuous performances are also available as a member of the Theatre student club, 4th Wall.

4th Wall Theatre Club
The 4th Wall is a student/faculty theatre club open to theatre majors or those students interested in being a vital part of the theatre program at BC. Members provide avid support to the Theatre Program of the Department of Visual & Performing Arts on Central Campus. There are certain criteria to be met in order to join the club. These include: attendance at monthly meetings, involvement in all BC theatrical productions, and a willingness to collaborate with other members in a spirit of collegiality and good will.

The members also focus on providing a professional outreach for theatre students. They host workshops, attend conferences, attend professional events, manage concessions for productions, as well as, travel to state and regional theatre festivals, such as the American College Theatre Festival. For more information contact one of the theatre professors. Meetings are held monthly on Thursdays from 3:30 until 4:30pm on Central Campus either in the Fine Arts Theatre (Building 6/2nd Floor) or in New Building 6/Room 208.
