Visual Arts & Design Academy (VA&DA)

Are you a passionate, talented artist? Do you have what it takes to succeed?

VA&DA is a highly competitive, selective, intense program of study in the visual arts. This amazing program is located on the Broward College’s Central Campus. Graduates from the program will have the skills to apply to any prestigious 4 year visual arts program to complete their Bachelor’s degree.

How are students chosen to participate?

Applicants to VA&DA are chosen through portfolio review by Broward College senior art faculty jurors in the Fall of each year.


Each year only 15 students are chosen to study in the VA&DA program, which means that competition for seats in this exclusive visual arts program is very strong.

Do I have to be a recent high school graduate to participate?

Visual arts students.

VA&DA is open to all students who are admissible to Broward College and are pursuing a Associates in Art Degree in the Visual Arts.


Students must be considered a new college student. All students, whether recent high school graduates or not, are welcome to participate.



Expectations of a VA&DA student

VA&DA students are expected to study in selected courses designed to foster an intense, collaborative creative atmosphere.

Classes are kept intimate in size (no more than 15 students per class) to ensure the maximum interaction between the student and VA&DA professors.


Critical thought process, along with rigorous formal training, constitutes the foundation of all VA&DA courses. Students will be guided not only on the process of making, but will also be pushed to analyze the content of their artistic creations.

Can prospective students visit the Central Campus?

Yes, prospective students and parents are able to visit the campus to see the College’s beautiful facilities.

Additionally, the Visual & Performing Arts Department will be hosting semester Open Houses for prospective students.

Application Process

All VA&DA Program applicants must fill out the entire application packet and return it, along with a CD or thumb drive portfolio containing 15-20 images of recent visual works and a written artist statement.

Completed applications must be returned to the Broward College Visual Art & Design Academy Enrollment Services Office no later than two weeks prior to the fall term start. Packets postmarked or hand-delivered later than the deadline date or those that are incomplete will not be considered for the fall semester start.

How long is the application review process?

Print being framed.The application review time varies and is based on the number of portfolios that are received.

Once a decision is made, applicants will be notified by mail.

What if I am not admitted to the program?

Due to the exclusive nature of the VA&DA program, not all applicants are selected. Do not be discouraged if you are not among those initially selected. 

Applicants may apply more than once for entry into this highly competitive program.
