Broward College accepts language exams taken through the Brigham Young University’s Foreign Language Achievement Tests Services (BYU FLATS). This service allows students to fulfill the foreign language competency requirement by passing a computerized foreign language exam. Exams are offered in over  60 languages.

Can I take a foreign language achievement exam at Broward College?

​Yes. You may take the foreign language exam at one of four testing centers: North Campus, Central Campus, South Campus, and Miramar West Center.

What languages are offered?
BYU FLATS is available in numerous languages:  

The following language exams are offered on paper, and cost $75 each: Afrikaans, Aymara, Cakchiquel, Guarani, Maori, Navajo, Quechua, Rarotongan, and Welsh.
How do I register for the BYU FLATS exam at a Broward College Testing Center?

​Log on to the BYU FLATS website to begin the registration process.

1. You will be asked to provide personal information, including your BC student ID.

2. You will be asked to provide proctor information. Please provide the information of the testing center for which you will be taking the foreign language exam.

3. You will be asked to provide information on where testing results should be sent. BC students should provide the following information:

4. Pay the $50 registration fee to BYU FLATS.

  • There is also a $18.50 proctoring fee. 
  • Paper exams have a $75 registration fee.
5.Once payment is processed you will receive a confirmation email, which will include your testing password. You will bring the testing password with you to a BC testing center.

6. Make an testing arrangements with the BC Testing Center where the exam will be administered.
  • Remember to bring your student ID, testing password from BYU FLATS, and $18.50 testing fee to your testing appointment. 
  • Non-BC students pay a $20 per hour testing fee.
Do I take the exam on a computer?

​Yes. Most exams are computerized, and are taken in a BC testing center. A few exams are paper/pencil versions. 

How much time do I have to take the exam?

​Each exam is timed to a maximum of two and a half hours (2.5 hours).

When do I get my test results?

Unofficial test results are immediately emailed to the student at the conclusion of testing. 

  • The test proctor will ask you to access your email after testing to print a copy of the unofficial scores for the Testing Center to keep.  

Official test results* are mailed (paper copy) to the Broward College Registrar's Office. 

*Processing of official test results may take up to 4 weeks to show on your official BC record. 

Can I retake the exam if I don’t pass?

​Yes. Exams can be retaken every six (6) months.

Do I have to be a Broward College student to take a BYU FLATS test at a Broward College Testing Center?

 No. Non-BC students can take the BYU FLATS exam at Broward College. Simply follow the registration instructions above. Provide proctor information of the BC campus where you wish to take the exam when prompted. Also provide information for where test results should be sent to your current college/university. Non-BC students pay a $20 per hour testing fee.
