College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College Board’s College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) has been a widely trusted credit-by-examination program for over 50 years, accepted by 2,900 colleges and universities and administered in more than 1,800 test centers. This program allows students from a wide range of ages and backgrounds to demonstrate their mastery of introductory college-level material and earn college credit. Students can earn credit for what they already know by getting qualifying scores on most of the 33 examinations. The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) offers miltary personnel the opportunity to earn college credit for what you already know by taking any of the 33 introductory-level college subject exams*. Because the exams are funded by the United States government through the Defense Activity for Non Traditional Education Support (DANTES), you could save hundreds or even thousands of dollars towards your degree.

Testing times differ from center opening and closing times.

Student Testing Times:  Students must be seated in the Testing Center no earlier/later than the time reflected below if they are taking all 3 sections of the PERT test!

  • CLEP exams are 90 minutes long. Total test time is approximately 120 minutes. 
  • Note: Several CLEP exams are 120 minutes long. Total test time is approximately 150 minutes. 

 General Information

  • CLEP exams range from 90 to 120 minutes in length. 
    • (Total test time will include at least 30 additional minutes for test setup and completion.)
  • The CLEP is a computer based exam. 
  • Unofficial test results are available at the end of most CLEP exams. 
  • Official CLEP results will be sent to the institution(s) you indicate when you register for a CLEP exam in My Account
    • It takes up to four weeks to deliver a score report for a CLEP exam officially to an institution.
    • This does not include the additional time it takes to process your CLEP transcript at Broward College. 
  • CLEP exam scores available from College Board for 20 years. 
  • Canceling of scores must be due at the end of the exam. 
    • There's no way to cancel scores once an unofficial score report is generated.

    • You will be required to create a My Account. 
  • Pay for the exam
  • Print your registration ticket 
    • Valid ticket is required to administer any CLEP exam

 CLEP Retest Policy

​Effective as of October 17, 2014, the CLEP waiting period to retest is three months. You may not repeat an exam of the same title within three months of the initial testing date. If you retake the exam within the three-month period, your administration will be considered invalid, your score will be canceled and any test fees will be forfeited.

DANTES-funded military examinees: DANTES does not fund retesting on previously funded CLEP exams. However, service members may personally fund a retest after waiting three months.

Instructions for requesting testing accommodations:

  1. Student informs the Testing Center of their need for accommodations.
  2. Testing Center informs the Disability Services department a student taking the CLEP has requested accommodations.
  3. Student presents documentation to Disability Services department.
  4. Disability Services department intakes documentation.
  5. Accommodations* are determined.
  6. Disability Services department informs Testing Center about candidate's accommodations.
  7. Candidate contacts Testing Center to schedule the test with accommodations.
  8. Testing Center plans for accommodated testing needs.
  9. Candidate tests.
*Certain accommodations may require specific materials from CLEP and may be delivered in a pencil and paper format.
