Bob Starkman enters his eighth season as head men’s basketball coach for Broward Community College and 12th overall at BCC, having served four years as the women’s head basketball coach. Throughout his tenure as the men’s coach, BCC has captured two Southern Conference Championships (2003, 2004), appeared in two Florida Community College Athletic Association (FCCAA) State Tournaments and received three national rankings in the final NJCAA polls.
The 2007-08 Seahawks finished 7th in the final FCCAA with a 23-8 record including being crowned the Southern Conference Tournament champions. The Seahawks season came to an end with a loss in the semi-finals of the state tournament.
Sophomore Tony Dennison was named second team NJCAA all-American after receiving third team NJCAA all-American as a freshman. This achievement caps a sophomore season that includes being named first team NJCAA All-Region VIII, first team All-Florida College Activities Association (FCCAA) and Southern Conference Player of the Year. Dennison finished seventh in the NJCAA in scoring (24.1 pg) and fifth in steals (4.5 pg). Three other Seahawks were named all-conference, including Miklos Szabo (first team), Devon Peterson (first team) and Jamaal Bryant (second team). The Seahawks finished fourth in the state in team scoring (83.1 ppg) and first in field goal percentage (62.1%). No other team in the state shot at a 50% rate.
In his seven years leading the men’s program, Starkman has amassed an impressive overall record of 139-70. In addition, Starkman has produced six NJCAA all-Americans and several of his former athletes are playing professionally in the United States and abroad. Starkman was recognized as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. During the 2005 season, Starkman was selected to coach in the first FCCAA All-Star game.
Coach Starkman understands the importance of recruiting and has strong ties to New York City basketball where he served as a coach for the Brooklyn Beasts, an international prep all-star squad, as part of the Eastern Regional Basketball Club. In addition to his coaching duties, Starkman is completing his career as a special agent for the U.S. Customs, Department of Homeland Security with over 28 years of law enforcement experience. He retired in January of 2008 and also spends numerous hours volunteering with youth sports.
Starkman played college basketball as a forward at Palomar (Cal.) Junior College (1974) and York (N.Y.) College (1975-1978). He is married to the former Jill Thompson, and they are the proud parents of daughter Alison (23) and sons Bobby (19) and Danny (16).
