Financial Assistance For Aviation Students

Financial aid help from federal, state and institutional sources offered to students in the form of grants scholarships, work programs and loans. If you qualify for financial aid, you can expect to receive an award that will be a combination of all forms of aid. If you apply early, you can expect to receive the maximum amount of financial assistance that Broward Community College has to offer you. All financial aid information, guides and application/forms are available on the web.

Because flight training can be very costly, you are urged to apply primarily for “free money”, investigate work-study opportunities, and finally loans. Students should also check with their employer for a reimbursement plan. Some companies may pay the entire cost of tuition, books, supplies and flight time. BCC is committed to assisting you in finding necessary funds to complete your flight training without incurring unreasonable debt.

Loan Programs

Federal Subsidized Stafford Loans – are need-based and require that students be enrolled in at least six credits for each term that they wish to receive a student loan. The federal government pays the interest for the Federal Subsidized Stafford loan until six months after a student graduates or drops below a half-time status. This is when a student falls into a repayment status. Yearly maximums are $2,625 for freshmen and $3,500 for sophomore students.

Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans – are awarded to students who are not eligible for Federal Subsidized loan and are not need-based. Students must be enrolled for at least six credits for each term that they wish to receive a student loan. Students who qualify for only a portion of the federal subsidized loan may receive their remaining eligibility up to their annual loan limit in the Federal Unsubsidized loan. Borrowing Limits are $2,625 for freshmen and $3,500 for sophomore students. Independent students may borrow up to an additional $4,000 in the federal unsubsidized loan to cover their remaining financial need. Unlike the Federal Subsidized loan, the Federal Unsubsidized loan interest is not paid by the federal government and the interest begins t accrue once the loan is disbursed to the school. Borrowers may elect to pay their interest on a monthly basis. Repayments begin six months after a student graduates or drop below a half-time status.

Federal PLUS Loans - for parents of dependent students who want to borrow towards educational expenses. Maximum eligibility is equal to cost education minus other aid. Variable interest rate is not subsidized. Repayment of principal and interest begins within 60 days of the disbursement of the loan. Parents may be eligible to defer repayment until student graduates. In order to receive a PLUS loan students must apply first for a Federal Pell Grant and a Federal Stafford Loan and have been determined ineligible for these programs.

Alternative Loans

Alternative loans can help you fill the gap when federal loans, scholarships, grants and work-study programs don’t quite meet your financial needs. Alternative loans are different from the federal education loans such as the Federal Stafford and PLUS loans because alternative loans are not guaranteed by the federal government. Credit guidelines apply in determining your eligibility for alternative loans. Some suggested lenders for alternative loans include:
Loans by SunTrust Bank
Loans by Sallie Mae and Chase Bank
