Jan Shakespeare, Dean Transportation programs: Aviation, Marine, Automotive
Jan Shakespeare is the Dean of Transportation Programs conducted through the Judson A. Samuels Campus and its partnership center at the Miramar Town Center. She has 13 years of years of progressively responsible experience at the college. She joined the college in 1997 teaching aeronautics and continued through various technologies - related positions to include program manager and associate dean for aviation operations. She is responsible for oversight of budget, and the leadership and direction of personnel in all aviation programs to include professional pilot, operations, airport management, air traffic control, and aviation maintenance, as well as the automotive and marine divisions. She earned two associates degrees from Broward College in professional pilot technology and aviation maintenance; a bachelor’s from Florida Atlantic University in Liberal Studies and master’s degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. She has over two decades of professional industry experience and FAA certifications as a maintenance technician and airline transport pilot, as well as airport operations. She served as the Chief Ground Instructor responsible for maintaining the college’s FAA certificate since 1999 and additionally brought the distinction of Broward College becoming an FAA approved Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) School for the Air Traffic Control program

Donnie R. Blalack, Associate Dean Aviation Maintenance Technology
Donnie began his career with Broward College in 2004 upon retiring from United Airlines after almost 35 years of service. His last position with United was as Aircraft Maintenance Manager for the Miami and Latin American region. Don began his aviation maintenance career upon graduation from high school by joining the U.S. Air force in 1965. While serving in the air forces Military Airlift Command, Don maintained several different types of transport aircraft. United Airlines came after the air force and Don was hired to accomplish jet engine and aircraft overhauls. During this time Don went to night school to obtain his A & P license and transferred to United Airline's operation while continuing to work towards an AA degree with San Jose City College. With a degree in hand, he successfully worked his way into management and continued his education towards a Bachelor of Art's Degree in Management from Saint Mary's College of California. During his career with United Airlines, Don had the opportunity to serve in many capacities in the maintenance field including overhaul mechanic, line A & P mechanic, station and systems planner, supervisor-line maintenance, inter-airline maintenance liaison, and station and regional manager. Numerous special assignments brought on by hard work and dedication to his company allowed for travel to numerous destination for aircraft maintenance related activities in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. His message to all students seeking to better themselves by obtaining the A & P certificates is to work hard, be dedicated, continue to seek higher education and better opportunities, and especially to not give up.


Eric J. Boylan, Interim Associate Dean Flight and Operations, FAA Chief Ground Instructor
Eric was raised in South Florida and began his aviation career at BC in 1989 where he graduated from the Private Pilot course. Eric then attended Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management Flight Technology with Honor as well as a Masters of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Engineer, CFI, CFII, and MEI certificates. Eric has experience on the SAAB 340 turboprop, Boeing 727, DC-10, and many other light twin and single engine aircraft. He has over 1,500 hours experience as a flight instructor and over 4,000 hours total flight time. Eric has returned to the Aviation Institute after having worked there as an Assistant Chief Flight Instructor for two years in 1995. Now he is committed to pass on all that he has learned in the aviation industry to new students as a Ground Instructor.


Evelyn M. Ruiz, Recruiter / Advisor / Admissions BC's Aviation Institute
Evelyn is responsible for the recruitment and advisement of all new aviation students including aviation maintenance, flight, operations and ATC. She is in charge of developing and implementing promotional and marketing initiatives and represents the aviation institute in several events including high schools, open houses and job and career fairs. Evelyn started at Broward College’s Aviation Institute in 2006 after working for more than a year as an academic advisor at the office of student affairs at BC's south campus. She came to South Florida twelve years ago after finishing her postgraduate studies in communication and local development at the Catholic University in Lyon, France. Evelyn was born in Costa Rica, Central America where she also graduated with a degree in mass communication. Before enrolling in her postgraduate studies in France, Evelyn worked with college students at the university system in Costa Rica for several years. Her experience includes working in distance education, advising college, ESOL and international students, and researching in the fields of communication, education and development. Evelyn is also fluent in English, Spanish and French.

Emilia Colageo, Administrative FAA Records Specialist, Flight and Operations Programs
Emilia has been employed at Broward College (BC) since July 1993 and has accepted various positions working in several departments which Emilia says has earned her the distinct background and knowledge of the operations at BC. Before joining BC, she worked in the corporate arena with nine years at Eastern Airlines in the manpower operations, inventory management and pricing departments. She spent most of those years as a Pricing Analyst and was responsible for 1000 commuter markets, keeping them competitive in the industry. Her background and passion for aviation and the airline industry has attracted her to the Flight and Operations Department and she is a valuable asset to the Aviation Department.

Oren Wallace, Flight Simulator Lab Coordinator
Oren learned to fly in 1956 in an Aeronaca Champ. After accumulating approximately 400 hours, he took time off (25 years) to get married and raise a family. In 1978 Oren returned to aviation and obtained his CFI, CFII, MEI, AGIIA, and began instructing part time. In 1989, he became a full time instructor for a part 141 flight school. He achieved his Airline Transport Pilot Certificate and became a chief flight instructor in 1990. Oren has accumulated over 6000 hours total time and 5000 hours of instruction. He is now the flight training lab instructor at BC working with aspiring young pilots as well as airline pilots moving up to the right seat.


Ron Brinson – Air Traffic Control Lab Manager
Ron Brinson is a retired FAA Air Traffic Controller with over 34 years of experience working in a control tower and radar environments. His career as an Air Traffic Controller started in the United States Air Force at Hill AFB in a joint FAA/ Military Rapcon where controllers work all types of military and civilian aircraft. He began working for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an Air Traffic Controller in 1981. He has worked at Hollywood North Perry (HWO), Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport (TMB), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL), and Miami International (MIA). In addition to working as an Air Traffic Controller, he has been a Quality Assurance and Training Specialist at FLL, a Front Line Manager at TMB and a Training Staff Specialist at MIA. We are pleased to have Ron, with his experience and expertise, in our ATC program and Ron says he is very happy to be a part of the AT-CTI program at Broward College.


Abdolreza (Ray) Roodbari, Aviation Support Specialist
Abdolreza (Ray) is the coordinator of the aircraft hangar operations and labs with specific knowledge of aviation maintenance operations (electricity, hydraulics, reciprocating, engines, turbine engines, ac, etc). His work includes logistical planning, developing and maintaining of labs. He is in charge of budgetary expenditures, inventory control, purchasing of all lab equipment, supplies, chemicals and tools. Ray is an honor graduate from our BC Aircraft Maintenance Management Program and he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Florida International University (FIU). His experience includes working as an A & P Technician, focusing on preventive maintenance, heavy maintenance, inspection, and periodic services in companies such as Miami Air International and Commodore Aviation Company. Ray is a US citizen born in Iran; he’s married and he’s bilingual in English and Farsi.

Sheila English -Air Traffic Control Full Time Professor
Sheila English was born and raised in Hollywood, FL. As a young girl, she dreamed of being an Air Traffic Controller. She passed the Civil Service Exam (ATSAT) at the age of fifteen. Her Air Traffic Control education began as a student of Broward College Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) Program. This program gave her the knowledge, skills and confidence she needed to become a professional Air Traffic Controller. She graduated with an Associate of Science degree in Air Traffic Control. Then she continued her education to Florida International University (FIU), where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology and Transportation. Then hired by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), she passed the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City. She first served as a Flight Service Specialist at Crestview FSS, Crestview, FL. In January 19982, she transferred to Ft .Lauderdale Executive Air Traffic Control Tower, and her Air Traffic career dream was coming true. In January 1988, she advanced to Ft Lauderdale International Air Traffic Control Tower, where she continued to control air traffic to this day. She has trained many developmental controllers, on the job training (OJT), in the area of separation requirements, regulations, procedures and phraseology necessary to safely control air traffic. She’s very excited to be instructing at Broward College because she sees it as an opportunity to give students, the wonderful gift she was given of a 30 year career as an Air Traffic Controller.

Fihmi Rossman - Flight Ground Professor
Mr. Rossman is an adjunct professor and in this role, he provides instruction to primary and advance level college students mainly in the professional pilot field. Fihmi believes in providing the students with a solid foundation that will allow them to succeed as professional pilots. Fihmi has been qualified as a ground and flight instructor for 12 years. As a professional airline pilot, he has over 2000 flight hours of instruction given, along with over 8,000 hours of total flight time. Fihmi also holds an Air Transport Pilot certificate (ATP) with type ratings on the Jet stream 3200/4100 turbo prop airplanes, the Fairchild Dornier 328 Jet, and the Airbus 319/320/321. Fihmi has more than 8 years of airline experience as a captain, and 4 years as a First Officer. Fihmi also hold a bachelors of Science degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). He’s the Advisor to Alpha Eta Rho and Seahawks Flight Team


David R. Griffith, Instructor Maintenance Technology
David is a native of Barbados. He came to the United States in 1980 and attended Beech Channel High School in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, where he pursued aviation through an internship program. David’s last year of high school included and internship at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the airspace and procedure division. In 1990 he graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute with a BS in Aeronautical studies. He additionally obtained his airframe and power plant license, his private pilot license and also had his first child! He has held positions at Greenwich Aerospace, Fine Air, Commodore Aviation, and most recently Avborne. He has extensive experience in general aviation; corporate jets as well as commercial aircraft. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with his fellow students.

Timothy Griffin, Assistant Professor, Aviation Maintenance Management
Tim is a seasoned maintenance professional with more than 20 years in aviation. Tim is a BC alumni, having graduated with Honors and was awarded the "Aviation Department Award." He has since successfully completed a Bachelors in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University as well as a Masters degree in Aeronautical Sciences this year. Tim is a third generation family member that has grown up and resided in Fort Lauderdale. He and his family reside locally and Tim is fully committed to the success of our students.


Glenn E. Walters, Instructor, Aviation Maintenance Technology
Glenn has participated in most all aspects of aviation maintenance since 1980. He began his career at Lockheed where he held a variety of job classifications. Since 1985, he has been employed with a major airline. In 1997 he was named "Company Technician of the Quarter." Additionally, Glenn has been employed as a B-747 fleet maintenance manager for a cargo carrier. Glenn received his A&P licenses from Northrop University, his Bachelor Degree in Finance at the University of Texas, and his MBA from Florida Atlantic University; he is very interested in the business aspect of airline and aviation management. Glenn loves to teach others and share his knowledge that is required to excel as an aviation technician. A true maintenance professional, Glenn today still enjoys the challenges of "rolling up his sleeves and getting involved" in hands-on aircraft maintenance.


Emilio Lizarraga Assistant Professor, Maintenance Technology
Emilio is a native of Venezuela and at the age of 19 traveled to the United States to attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. He was awarded a Bachelors of Science degree in 1985 and proceeded to work for several domestic and international airlines, including Presidential in Washington D.C., Discovery Airways in Hawaii, British Airways in Scotland and D.I.A.F (the Ecuadorian Air Force). Emilio resides locally and joined our institute in 1996. His dedication to aviation has and continues to be his focus. He most enjoys student interactions and the opportunities to share his experiences in "the business."

Robert L. Lumley, Jr., Instructor, Maintenance Technology
Bob has literally spent his lifetime around North Perry Airport. A graduate of the Miramar school system, he went on to complete his Associate degree in Aviation Administration at BC. He subsequently obtained his FAA Airframe and Power plant license and Private Pilot certificate while working for local general aviation firms. In 1998 he completed his Master of Business Administration in Aviation. He also has acquired his Master of Aeronautical Science and Bachelors degree in Professional Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He is presently an Accident Prevention Counselor for the FAA.


Tom Garrido, Aviation Maintenance Professor

Tom Garrido has 29 years in the aviation field. Graduated from an aviation high school in Queens, New York City with a FAA powerplant license, he started working in a local repair shop in New York in 1980. After high school Tom obtained his FAA airframe and FCC avionics licenses and moved into a major airline where he has worked various positions: aircraft technician, avionics technician and technical crew chief. In 1991 Tom moved to South Florida where he worked as crew chief for several years. He also continued studying and graduated from Broward College’s Aviation Maintenance Management associate in applied science degree and then became technical crew chief instructor. Since 2001, Mr. Garrido is been teaching courses such as human factors, principles of troubleshooting and general familiarization for A300 and MD80 aircraft
