Aviation Students Financial Aid

Basic Financial Aid for Professional Pilot Students

Because flight training can be very costly, students are urged to apply for financial aid. Financial aid can be a combination of grants, scholarships, loans and work study. Students are encouraged to apply for free money (grants and scholarships), investigate work-study opportunities and then research loan options. Students should also check with their employer for a reimbursement plan. Some companies may pay the entire cost of tuition, books, supplies and flight time. Broward College is committed to assisting students in finding necessary funds to complete their flight training without incurring unreasonable debt.

Please follow the steps below:

* Apply for FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov.) This is the first step in the process to determine eligibility for all sources of aid. A step by step guide through the process can be found at student financial services page.

Apply early. If eligible, it will maximize your chances of receiving as much free money as possible. Last year, Broward College awarded over $4 million in scholarship aid to eligible students who had completed their FAFSA early.

Apply yearly. Financial aid is awarded for each academic year from August through July. Broward College usually awards aid for the two major terms, fall and winter according to federal, state and institutional guidelines.

Financial Aid applications are available beginning in January for the upcoming academic year. The federal government determines eligibility on your last completed tax return and takes into account your income, assets, number of dependents and other relevant information. If your income drastically changed from last year, financial aid administrators are empowered to use professional judgment to adjust your income based on your current situation. You will have to provide extensive documentation to allow for an income adjustment. Click here for a student financial services request for income adjustment form.

* Check your financial aid status by logging into MyBC and clicking on the financial aid icon. It will tell you what forms you are missing and what other documents you may be required to submit to the Student Financial Services Office. Students should respond immediately to all requests for forms or additional information as doing so will ensure your financial aid will be awarded in a timely manner. All financial aid correspondence will be sent to your BC e-mail. Please check it frequently.

* Register for flight courses at the aviation admissions department. Make an appointment with the admissions advisor by calling (954) 201-8087. The advisor will explain and help you understand your assessment scores, assist you in academic and career planning, and help you plan a course schedule.

* Submit an Aviation Enrollment Plan (AVplan) available online at http://www.broward.edu/aviationprogram under “important forms.” The AVplan is not an award. It is a necessary form for professional pilot students to allow financial aid to increase your cost of attendance (budget) for flight training purposes.

If necessary,

* Apply for Stafford loans by submitting a Loan Request and Acceptance form to the campus Student Financial Services Office. Please go to link for information and steps to receive a loan: http://www.broward.edu/sfs/sfs/types/loanprocess/page12081.html

First time borrowers will have to complete an entrance interview as well as a debt management workshop. Debt management workshops are also mandatory for students who did not make satisfactory academic progresshttp://www.broward.edu/sfs/sfs/page13215.html or have borrowed over the loan limits.

* Apply for private or alternative loans only if you absolutely need to borrow additional funds. Financial aid does not initiate the private or alternative loan process. It is the student’s responsibility to apply for all private or alternative loans they might need to cover their flight training. It is also the student’s responsibility to inform Student Financial Services of any approved private loans as the loans must be certified with the school.
We do not want to give a list of lenders for private or alternative

To be eligible for any loan, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours. Private/ alternative loans will be cancelled if a student is not enrolled in 6 credits or if he/she is not enrolled in accordance with the AVplan.

Once your loan is certified, please allow 3-5 days to receive an email to your BC account to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN) (Loan e-signature).http://www.broward.edu/sfs/sfs/types/counseling/page12077.html(Please note: If you are a new borrower or have chosen a new lender, you will be required to complete a new MPN (Loan e-signature).http://www.broward.edu/sfs/sfs/types/counseling/page12077.html

After two working days, your loan will be accepted. If it is the beginning of the term, the loan will cover your tuition and you may buy books at the bookstore.

If you would like your funds deposited into your flight account, you must indicate this on your Aviation Enrollment Plan (AvPlan) form.

If your loan comes to Broward College in the form of a paper check, you will receive notification from the Student Financial Services Office when the check is here as it requires endorsement. Upon endorsement, the cashier will pay off all outstanding tuition and debt and will deposit funds into a flight account as indicated. If there is a fund balance after meeting the full cost of courses indicated on the Avplan, it is recommended you request remaining funds be added to your Flight Account. Otherwise, a check will be mailed to the borrower's home address (may be a parent if this is a PLUS loan).

If the loan funds come to Broward College electronically, the cashier will be informed and will pay outstanding tuition and debt and deposit flight funds as detailed on the Aviation Plan (Avplan) form. If there is a fund balance, again, it is recommended you request they go into your Flight Account. Otherwise, a check will be mailed to the borrower's home address (may be a parent if this is a PLUS loan).

The disbursement of loan funds depends on the timing of the request during the term. At the beginning of each term, the funds will be disbursed approximately 14 days after the drop and add period of the term ends. For loan funds requested in the middle of the term, the funds will be disbursed approximately three weeks after the initial request.
