Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting

 

Our unique "1 + 1" program format offers students the added value of becoming both a Certified Dental Assistant and a Registered Dental Hygienist. After completion of our American Dental Association accredited 10-month Dental Assisting certificate program you can earn a 12-month Associate in Science degree in Dental Hygiene.

 

The Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs are offered during the day with all classes taught at Broward College's Central Campus. General education courses may be taken at any Broward College location and are offered day, evening, weekends, and distance learning. Technically Speaking

 

As certified members of the dental team, dental assistants provide a wide range of services drawing on knowledge of the dental sciences; specialized, clinically-honed skills; and proficiency in office management procedures. Dental Assistants:

  • Work chair side with the dentist.
  • Sterilize equipment.
  • Transfer instruments during surgical procedures.
  • Take impressions of study casts.
  • Place and remove periodontal dressings.
  • Expose, process, and mount dental radiographs.
  • Prepare dental filling materials.
  • Provide oral hygiene instruction.

Perform selected laboratory and clerical office procedures.

As licensed members of the dental team, dental hygienists provide a variety of preventive and therapeutic procedures that promote good oral health. Dental Hygienists:

  • Perform procedures that aid in the prevention and treatment of gum disease.
  • Remove calculus and plaque from teeth.
  • Apply fluoride and sealant.
  • Take diagnostic radiographs.
  • Assist the dentist in providing oral health treatment.
  • Provide nutritional counseling.

Provide oral health education to the community.
