Educator Preparation Institute –
Alternative Certification Program

The alternative certification program for teacher preparation targets individuals currently holding a bachelor degree in an area of study other than education. This unique program provides the knowledge and tools needed to obtain a Florida Professional Teaching Certificate

This is a 21 credit program consisting of 7 courses and 2 field experiences. All 7 courses will be offered in either a blended or full on-line format. The 2 field experiences require 16 hours of observation in a Broward County public school classroom.


Applicants are required to:

  • Complete a BCC application on www.facts.org
  • Apply to the EPI program www.broward.edu/survey/epiapplication.htm
  • Hold a Bachelors Degree with a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Pass Broward County security clearance and fingerprinting (cost $80)
  • Have a statement of eligibility for certification from the Florida Department of Education

 


Students will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: classroom management, instructional strategies, diversity, technology, the teaching and learning process, foundations of language and cognition, and professional foundations.


Students will meet the following standards:

  • Florida Educator Accomplished Practices (FEAP)
  • Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC)
  • National Educational Technology Standards (NETS)

 


Students are encouraged to take the General Knowledge Exam prior to starting the program. In order for students to receive their certificate of completion, they must pass the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE). Once students have obtained a full-time teaching position in a Broward County public school, they will continue to receive support through the New Teacher Academy (NTA) and New Educator Support System (NESS).
