Phi Theta Kappa is the official honors society of the two year college (community/junior colleges). While the BCC Honors Institute is a college academic program, Phi Theta Kappa is a student organization of international scope, with over 1.5 million members as of 2006. Like BCC's Honors Institute, Phi Theta Kappa was founded to encourage the development and personal growth of outstanding, committed students and emerging student leaders.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 and operates around its four established "hallmarks" of leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and service. In doing so, this venerable society offers one of the most meaningful, stimulating, and enjoyable experiences available to community college students. Students stay busy and engaged with the numerous chapter activities and even national and international conferences.

Benefits

Besides the social and scholarly atmosphere it provides for students, Phi Theta Kappa offers many benefits to its members:

Scholarships: Special Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarships at an ever increasing number of universities (over 600 as of 2006)
Membership items: Gold embossed Certificate of membership,
wallet-size membership identification card, prestigous Golden Key Membership pin
Graduation Recognition: Members wear PTK’s golden monogrammed Honors Stole and Tassel at the graduation ceremony; the PTK Gold Diploma Seal to is affixed to members' BCC diplomas; students are verbally recognized for their membership at the announcement of their name
Travel: Phi Theta Kappa offers a number of annual conventions, which take place all over the United States.

There are even more benefits in addition to those listed above. Please visit ptk.org to find out more.

Joining Phi Theta Kappa

Each major BCC campus has its own Phi Theta Kappa "chapter." For each chapter there is a faculty member who serves as the chapter's advisor (advisor contact information is below). The chapters have an office on their campus where students may visit other members and/or chapter leaders (officers) to inquire about joining. Please Note: Applying to Phi Theta Kappa must be handled through the individual chapters and/or their advisors. The BCC Honors Institute is not involved in membership or other chapter affairs and cannot supply applications. However, the Honors Institute does maintain an active interest in supporting and promoting Phi Theta Kappa and its members at BCC. The Honors Institute also oversees college policies and relations concerning Phi Theta Kappa chapters.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • you must be enrolled in a BCC associate degree program
  • you must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework leading to an associate degree program (part-time students may be eligible)
  • you must generally have a college GPA of at least 3.5 (chapter requirements may vary)

Note: Please check with your campus' chapter to get the most accurate and up-to-date information.
