- Honors Graduation -

As an Honors student at BCC, one of the privileges that you have is the opportunity to earn a transfer scholarship to the university of your choice.

The Honors Institute is ready to help you with this process, however, it is the responsibility of you, the student, to read and perform the steps listed below. Please see the Transfer Scholarships page for scholarships listings and other helpful resources.

1) Plan on earning the Honors Institute Certificate

The Honors Institute Certificate is an articulated credential of academic distinction recognized by the Florida State University System and also by universities outside of Florida. It is conferred upon eligible BCC Honors student at graduation. Honors students are not required to obtain this certificate to be listed as members of the Honors Institute on their BCC transcript. However, having the Honors Certificate is an important asset when your application is evaluated for admission and for transfer scholarships. The Certificate is often necessary for admission to the junior year in Honors Colleges and can increase the scholarship amount awarded to you by some state universities.

Students must meet the following requirements to earn the Honors Certificate:

- AA Students: completion of 18 total credits of Honors courses (6 classes); one of the classes must be IDH2121
- AS Students: completion of 9 total credits of Honors Courses (3 classes); IDH2121 is not required
- minimum 3.5 GPA

2) Attend an Honors Transfer Scholarship Workshop

Be sure to attend an Honors Transfer Scholarship Workshop on your campus in the Fall term prior to the year during which you plan to graduate. Notice of these workshops is posted on the Honors website and is sent via email and postal mail to all Honors Students. It is critical that you sign on to your BCC email account because the Honors Institute has completed the conversion to email notification for all official announcements.

At the workshop, students will receive valuable information about transfer scholarships, especially those offered by Florida universities. Additionally, all pertinent forms will be distributed and all procedures will be explained.

3) Complete and return the "Honors Graduation Request & University Preference Form" by the Jan. 15 deadline

You must fill out the "Graduation Request & University Preference Form" by the posted January deadline of the year that you plan to graduate. This deadline applies to May, August, and December graduates. The form accomplishes two purposes:

1) It informs the Honors Institute of your graduation plans so that the Institute may prepare the Honors Certificate (if you are eligible) and/or other transcript information. The Institute must receive this information from you in order for your graduation to be properly processed. You should complete this form even if you are not seeking the Honors Certificate.

2) It informs the Honors Institute about the universities to which you are planning to transfer. The Institute may send nomination information to some universities, but you must personally apply for any scholarships that you seek by the university's posted deadlines. This is an important step in your efforts to get scholarship money. You must attach copies of the university applications for those universities that you have listed.

4) Complete and submit applications to the University(ies) of your choice before the applicable deadlines

You will need to apply to the university(ies) of your choice, pay the application fees and make sure that you complete all sections of the application. In addition, you usually will be required to submit a FAFSA, letters of recommendation and an essay on a topic specified in the application process. Be sure to follow directions and submit a complete application to each university you have chosen. Failure to do so may cause your file to be incomplete and you will lose scholarship money. Find out in advance about the application deadlines at your chosen university(ies). Note that you will need to meet the Spring application deadlines at the university(ies) of your choice, even if you plan on graduating from BCC in August or December. Please contact the university(ies) of your choice for further advice in this matter.

Finally, as mentioned above, be sure to attach copies of your university application(s) packet(s) to the “Honors Graduation Request & University Preference Form” that you submit to the Honors Institute by the January deadline. It is important that we have copies so that we can help you during the transfer process.

GOOD LUCK!!
