Noth Campus PTK Scores on First Academic Team |
North Campus, Omega Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) congratulates Jackeline Davey, chapter president who earned a position on the All-Florida First Academic Team.
Jose Aristimuno, former vice president earned a position on the All-Florida Second Academic Team. Each year, PTK International Honors Society partners with The Florida Education System to recognize high achieving students enrolled in Florida colleges.
Students are nominated because they hold active membership in PTK, have maintained a 3.5 grade point average and lead projects
Jackeline has been the president of the Omega Phi Chapter since winter 2009; she maintains a 4.0 GPA and has led significant projects at our college and within our community. Her most recent Terracycle project which generated over two thousand items that might have ordinarily been discarded as trash, to be upcycled has already been expanded to preschools and businesses.
“We are very proud of Jackeline,” said Dr. Bryan, North Campus Provost. “Our goal is for all our students to excel and the Honors program is one of our more successful initiatives.”
Accompanying Jackeline and Jose on these prestigious scholarly teams are four students from central and south campuses. Erika Collante, Silvina, Di Pietro, Bahareh Heidari Afonsi and Darwin Lopez Mendoza earned positions on the All-Florida Second Academic Team and will also be recognized and receive a medallion at an awards ceremony scheduled to be held at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel on April 8, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. as part of PTK Annual Conference.
Several universities have extended scholarships and other financial benefits to students placed on the All-Florida Academic Teams. For a list of universities and the scholarships offered, please visit the All-Florida Academic Team at ptk.org.

All day I've listened to the industry
of a single woodpecker, worrying the catalpa tree
just outside my window. Hard at his task,
his body is a hinge, a door knocker
to the cluttered house of memory in whic
I can almost see my mother's face.
She is there, again, beyond the tree,
its slender pods and heart-shaped leaves,
hanging wet sheets on the line -- each one
a thin white screen between us. So insistent
is this woodpecker, I'm sure
he must be looking for something else -- not simply
the beetles and grubs inside, but some other gift
the tree might hold. All day he's been at work,
tireless, making the green hearts flutter.

Come take a walk by the Honors Economics project |
Everyone is invited to take a walk by the Honors Economics project which was unveiled yesterday in the window case beside room 233 in building 71.
This semester’s theme was the development of the Euro. The honors class has delivered group presentations on the motivations and adjustments of France, Germany and Italy in the creation of the Euro; the process that created the Euro; and the current role of the Euro in international trade and finance. The window display brings together many of these elements.
Last year’s Honors Economics project is in the window case between room 232 and 233. We looked at four Asian economies during the fall semester 2008.
The students responsible for the display were Cecilia Pereira, Fedilia Guzman & Kimone Davis. Please stop by and take a look.

transfer choices. Now more ever it is time to introduce our students to his message and network.

Brain Bowl Tryouts Dates Announced. |
The Brain Bowl Team at Broward College has a proven track record of victories, on the regional, state and even national level. Do you like trivia? Have a passion for literature, science, or math? Are you a quick thinker? Do you watch Jeopardy and find yourself answering the questions before the contestants do? Then try out for the Brain Bowl team and join the fun.
Tryouots will be held on the Wednesday the 17th and Thursday the 18th of September in Building 7 Room 177 on Central Campus from 2pm - 4pm.
What is Brain Bowl?
Brain Bowl is an annual academic competition among teams from participating Florida community colleges. The teams, each consisting of up to five members, first compete in their assigned regions. Winners of the regional tournaments go on to compete in the state tournaments, usually held in February or March. Brain Bowl members also participate in NAQT (National Association of Quiz Tourneys) tournaments, a nationwide college competition. Unlike Brain Bowl, which is limited to Community Colleges, NAQT tournaments are open to all universities.
What are the Rules?
A match begins with a 10-point toss-up round. The moderator asks a question and anyone on the team may answer by "buzzing in" without conferring with other team members. If the answer is correct, the team gets to participate in a 20-point bonus round. The team may confer, but they must answer in 5 seconds. The team with the most points at the end of the 44-question round wins. Brain Bowl questions cover the four subject areas of the two-year community college curriculum: Humanities, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences. On the other hand, NAQT has Jeopardy style "Pop Culture" questions.
What to Expect
Broward has won the Florida State Brain Bowl Championship 7 times and won the NAQT National Championship in 2006, so we have a reputation to uphold. The team participates in 4 - 6 tournaments per year, often involving travel to other Florida cities and sometimes out of state. The team practices on Central Campus in Building 1 Room 140 every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm - 4pm. Brain bowl is fun, exciting and challenging. There is a limited number of scholarship money for students who make the team and qualify. If you think you have what it takes, come on out and show your stuff.
Team coaches are Professor Rob Fusco and Professor Ronnie Rothschild.
For more information contact rfusco@broward.edu or rrothsch@broward.edu.

Hallandale High School students take Honors classes as part of the dual-enrollment program. |
A total of 58 students from Hallandale High School will be dual-enrolled in two Honors courses each term for 2008-2009 in South Campus. The group of high school juniors and seniors qualified due to their outstanding SAT or ACT scores.
They are bused in by Hallandale High School two days a week in order for them to take their college credit classes. Most of the students are attending for the first time, other are in their second year at Broward College.
All this is possible due to the efforts of the students’ BRACE advisor, Ms. Karline Prophet. “[She] has done an outstanding job in bringing her very best students to our attention. She is a great partner!” said Dr. Irmgard Bocchino, Associate Vice President. She continued by saying “I am very happy about the early success of the recruitment efforts for this pilot program.”
Congratulations to all the students.

Honors Institute transitions to Student ID# for all forms |
In an effort to protect student privacy and combat the risk of identity theft, BC (and The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute) will now identify students using a unique student identification number instead of the student's social security number. Starting this term, ALL Honors forms require your Student ID# (SID).
To obtain your Student ID, please go to the BC homepage and log on to MyBC (on the left side) using your social security number. After signing in, you will see a small box at the top of the page with your Student ID.

Boulder, CO– The Center for Transforming Student Services (CENTSS) has just selected 10 higher
education services as “best practices” in student services online. Selected from more than 50

answers to students’ most commonly asked questions via natural language searches.
- Quest—Ball State University in Indiana developed a career services tool to explore the
university’s majors and career opportunities.

program that’s integrated with its student data system for current students and provides transcripts of discussions.
- Orientation to Online Learning—Metropolitan State University in Minnesota created this service to welcome students to the university and online learning.
- E-Counseling—San Diego City College created e-counseling services using VoIP to provide private counseling appointments and group workshops.
- Catalyst Guides—University of Washington produced guides for students seeking independent, how-to assistance in the use of technologies.
- RUReady—University of Utah designed a self assessment and learning tool that allows prospective students to gauge their readiness to take calculus and other college-level math courses and to remediate specific academic areas of weakness.
- Online Concierge Service—Walden University in Minnesota offers personalized support for students from the time of enrollment until graduation.
The center’s best practice profiles provide detailed information about each service, such as key features,
goals, outcomes, technology infrastructure, and lessons learned. In addition to offering these best
practice profiles, CENTSS licenses its Online Audit Tool to institutions interested in benchmarking their
online student services.
Other CENTSS resources include links to articles related to providing services online and invitations to
workshops and other events focused on providing better service to students with the use of technology.

The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute celebrates student achievement at BC |
On May 17, 2006, The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute held its twenty-fourth annual award celebration to recognize students collegewide for their achievement, commitment, and service at Broward College. The greatest strength of The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute, and BC itself, lies in the students who have chosen to lend their time and talents to this institution. BC students have once again made the college proud! Some of the highlights are as follows:
- The BC Brain Bowl team earned both state and national victories
- The BC Math Team placed in the top three in both team and individual state competitions
- All six of BC's official All-Florida/All-USA nominees earned placements on the All-Florida Academic Teams, with one student placing on the All-USA Academic Teams (2nd Team)
- For the second straight year, a BC student earned the prestigious national Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite scholarship (only 20 are awarded)
- For the second time in three years a BC student became a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar, earning a full tuition scholarship (up to $30,000) to any university in the United States
- Over 40 BC Honors graduates earned one or more substantial transfer scholarships to Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, and/or the University of Miami
- Of the nearly 150 Honors graduates, over a third earned their Honors Institute certificate (requires min. 3.5 GPA and 6 Honors classes, including IDH 2121), with more graduates projected to earn their certificate after completing course requirements during the summer term.
- Of the eighteen BC College Academy students who participated in The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute, four earned Honors Institute Certificates, a significant accomplishment considering the College Academy's rigorous program
Besides recognizing the above achievements, The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute presented departmental and Dean's awards for each of its three major campuses. Faculty members nominated those students whose academic excellence, leadership, and/or service made them exemplary within their respective departments or the entire campus (Dean's award).
Two exciting announcements were made that night. Dr. Irmgard Bocchino, the Associate Vice President of The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute, presented a check to the BC Foundation establishing the Robert F. Bocchino Family Scholarship Endowment in her father's memory. From this endowment, one outstanding Honors graduate from each campus will receive a $1000 transfer scholarship every May. An application form and further details will be available later this year. In addition, Nova Southeastern University will now offer 5 dedicated full-tuition transfer scholarships exclusively to BC Honors students to attend the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Nova Southeastern University.
Please visit The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute Student Hall of Fame to see the students who were recognized. Names, and often photos, are available for each award category. You may also view the PowerPoint from the event. A professional photographer captured many photos at the event. The best ones are available in this year's photo album. Please contact The Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors Institute to request print-quality digital images or additional photos not available in the album.

Brain Bowl team earns national victory |
By Jackie Loftus, Brain Bowl Coach
BC's Brain Bowl Team added another victory to our impressive 2005/2006 season this past weekend by winning the NAQT's National Community College title at the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament at the University of Maryland. Faulkner State was the highest-finishing CC team (14th) after the initial 13 matches and entered the final with a 1-game advantage, but BC won two head-to-head games to win the CC title.
All 5 members of the qualifying Brain Bowl team were instrumental in our victory, but no one more so than Samuel Sklaroff, who finished second in overall points per game for the community college division and 11th overall for Division 2, out of 146 undergraduate competitors. Other team members finished as follows out of 146 players: Sam Ward - 75th, Carl Heuett - 90, Jessica Katz - 134, and Spencer Miller - 141.
For those of you who are counting, (and let's face it - who isn't?) BC's Brain Bowl Team has finished in first place for both the nationals and sectionals for the NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournament) competitions, and second place for both the regional and state competition for Brain Bowl. I am sure that you are as proud of them as we are. If you see any of the team members around on campus, please congratulate them on their victorious season.
Although this is the end of our season for this year, we are always looking for more players for next year's team. Good players have a strong knowledge in their subject area and have quick recall. We would especially like to attract students from the other campuses as they under-represented on the team. If you have any prospective players in your classes please direct them to either Rob Fusco 6/250, Jackie Loftus 17/235 or Pat Smith 1/123. Students that make the team are eligible for scholarship money.

BC Honors student wins a national Guistwhite Scholarship for second year in a row
|
Sally-Anne McDonnell, President of the PTK Omega Phi Chapter (North Campus)!!! Sally-Anne is one of only twenty students nationwide to be awarded the prestigious Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite scholarship (worth $5000). At the Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Seattle this term, Sally-Anne will represent BC as she receives this outstanding award. She will also be recognized at the annual Honors Institute Awards Celebration this May.
Ms. McDonnell is the latest example of the continuing outstanding academic achievement of BC Honors students. This is the second straight year that a BC Honors student has won a Guistwhite scholarship, and other recent achievements include Jack Kent Cooke and All-USA Academic Team scholarships.
Guistwhite Scholars are chosen based upon academic achievement, participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs, and service to the college and community. The Guistwhite Scholar Program is named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite, who established the first designated transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members, and his wife, Margaret Guistwhite.

Brain Bowl team wins early victories |
BC's Brain Bowl Team has itself poised to make a move at the State and
National levels.
On the weekend of February 3rd, BC sent two teams to the regional
tournament at PBC. The "Broward White" team went undefeated in match
play, but lost a close match to IRCC (who they beat in match play) in
the finals, finishing second overall. Sam Ward of the white team was the
overall high scorer and other members Spencer Miller, Jessica Katz and
Ilyssa Sanders all performed well. Our second team, "Broward Blue,"
consisting of Luis Soriano, Jessica Enogieru, Amanda Reynold, and Stacie
Davis finished in third place, which is very respectable for new players
that will anchor next year's team. The second place finish for the white
team qualifies them for the state tournament which will take place March
2-4 at Brevard Community College.
On the weekend of February 11th, BC entered three teams in the NAQT
(National Academic Quiz Teams) Sectional Tournament in Orlando. The
white team consisting of Sam Ward, Samuel Sklaroff, Spencer Miller, and
Jessica Katz took first place. It is BC's third sectional championship
in a row! More importantly, BC gets the automatic bid for the national
IQT tournament in College Park, Maryland, April 7 & 8. Samuel Sklaroff
finished as the individual high scorer. BC's silver team (Carl Heuett,
Athena Sheth and Jonathan Bruser) finished 7th, and the blue team (Amanda
Reynold, Jessica Enogieru and Stacie Davies) finished 11th. Carl Heuett
of the silver team was the 5th overall scorer and will be joining the
white team in College Park.
As always, Brain Bowl is looking for talented students for next year. Interested students should contact coaches Rob Fusco 7/216 or Jackie
Loftus 17/235. Also see the Brain Bowl page.
