Welcome!
Broward College has been committed to offering talented
students an enriched, challenging curriculum and college experience
through its Honors Institute. One of the most highly acclaimed two year
programs in the country, the Institute coordinates class schedules
for honors sections, the Scholar Award Program for high school
students, the Brain Bowl and Math Team competitions
and university application and scholarship requests. With over 1100
active students and approximately 35 classes scheduled per major term,
the Institute is an active and thriving academic community.
Qualified
students who wish to get the most out of college and who are interested
in new concepts and approaches to learning should consider applying
to join the Institute to take advantage of the potential it offers.
Stimulating classes that offer individual attention from highly
qualified faculty, intellectual flexibility and an intensive atmosphere
characterize the honors courses scheduled on all three campuses.
From English composition to anthropology to biology to statistics,
the Institute provides classes in many different academic disciplines
and limits enrollment to a maximum of twenty students in each
class. All honors sections include special projects and advanced
research components designed to challenge students and prepare
them for upper division coursework and majors courses.
One
of the strengths of the program is the diversity of students enrolled.
Full and part-time students, traditional high school graduates
as well as early enrollment students, returning students who have
been away from college for years, people seeking different career
tracks, a broad ethnic and international mixture-- there is no
one defining characteristic of BC Honors Institute students except
academic excellence. The variety of backgrounds, interests, and
expertise combines to create dynamic and unique classroom exchanges
that benefit all involved and make the Honors experience an invaluable
and long-lasting one. Most honors students go on to matriculate
at four year universities and enter directly into upper division
honors programs where they continue to excel.
Any
student who is currently enrolled and has earned a 3.5 GPA in twelve
credit hours or more of college level coursework at BC is eligible
to apply for admission as are high school students who graduate
in the top ten percent of their class or who have a 3.5 unweighted
GPA Students who have high standardized test scores and demonstrate
potential may also apply.
Sincerely,
Irmgard
